I was a bit tired, was sitting and think I must have put my weight on the inside as I was just comming out of a sharp turn, but slowly though, using the road camber as a berm. Anyway on to Rhodes where: NT phoned home! Jane:ARE You taking the Arnica I gave you???? NT:YES took immediately! Neil, a great report with good photos. We have been into that area several times with Nigel & Sally, That trip is stunning, you have brought back some great memories. Ignore opinions, heed facts. Feet on the pegs, always.

Think before you ink.

Trust is the most valuable asset.

I have the rest of my life to get old.

Thanks for the report, please elaborate on the cause of that fall for us newbies. Quote "I must have put my weight on the inside as I was just comming out of a sharp turn" Kobus --------- Dream like you will live forever, live like you're going to die tomorrow

If you took a pencil, holding it vertically, you then press down from above on it, this represents your bike riding down a straight road. If you now leaned this over to your left, this represents your bike going around a L-hand corner(as I was). Now keep leaning this over to your Left, at some point the pencil will slide to the right. Now repeat this BUT Now, place your R-index finger +- 50mm up from the bottom, on the RHS against the pencil while continuing to press down and gradually increasing the lean to the left, you should find this will now not as easily slide to the R. In off-road terms you put your weight on the Outside-Peg. If you pressed with your R-index finger from LHS +-50mm up from bottom, it should slide almost immediately as you lean over to the Left. In off-road terms you put your weight on the Inside-Peg (my mistake I think). On any high friction surface (tar road) a fairly high angle of lean without slipping is possible, on gravel(reduced friction coefficient) we assist matters by shifting our weight between the pegs. Increasing grip or inducing a slide depending on where the weight is in relation to the direction of lean. Another term for this is the vectoring of forces. Hope this serves to clarify, not confuse.

Neil, Greta and I went past the empty dam in May last year. This was buildt in 1958. Aparently the river turned brackish, so they rerouted it and the dam has been empty ever since. And this is why we work - to go on such lovely trips! ;)

Thanks Neil So you are applying pressure/weight to the outside. In theory are you leaning to the inside while doing this? Kobus Kobus --------- Dream like you will live forever, live like you're going to die tomorrow

To turn the corner the bike needs to lean (if the speed is a bit more than a very slow walk). A bike turns by reduced radius. Think about the diameter of the centre of the front wheel vs the diameter of the outer edge. By applying downward force from the outside,"inwards" the tyre is less inclined to slide out. So in reality yes. If you don't, you get a different reality, the one I had.

Sorry, I meant are you leaning more to the inside than the bike. Kobus --------- Dream like you will live forever, live like you're going to die tomorrow

No, in most cases you will remain largely vertical, leaning the bike, eg. you vertical the bike leaned over to left, your weight on RHS peg (LH turn)

Thanks Danie. This may help too. The pencil at perpendicular to the surface was the least likely to slide. Now imagine a ball with a vertical pencil on it, if the centre line through the pencil passes through the centre of the ball, the pencil will be perpendicular to the ball. Now rotate the ball +-20 degrees anti-clockwise,the pencil if pushed down it's centre line is still at it's most stable(unlikely to slip) Here the ball represents the camber of the road,at this 20 deg.position the weight on the pegs should be even. Now consider a LH turn, riding through it in, 1:the L inside edge; 2:the middle 3:the RHS outer edge.Based on a cambered road, 1 would be best; 3 the worst, not so?
