Jurg se Kaya: tackling West Coast Sand

In the spirit of “rather late than never”, here it is.

Prequel (Thu 17 Nov)

Lance finally talked me into tackling the club’s annual trek to the “land of sand”, i.e. Jurg se Kaya on the West Coast. Then he had the audacity to bail and leave me to tackle the first two days minus my usual shadow. He had a good reason though: attending his gran’s funeral (she died at the ripe old age of 95).

"Look Up, Stand Up, Pick your Bike Up!" was how several members of our tour party summarised their experience on arrival at Jurg se Kaya on Friday afternoon.

Jurg se Kaya 2011 trip report

"Be afraid. Be very afraid." It was the pre-trip get-together at Geoff's house, and Geoff had the floor. And no, Geoff was not talking about the sandy parts of the trip - it was the strafdoppe he was warning us about. But more about that later.

The trip to Jurg se Kaya on the West Coast is one of those 'must do' trips on the club's calendar. This year was no different, and the trip filled up within a matter of hours.

Wild Wild West...... Coast May 2009

It was a rainy miserable day on the public holiday of the 1st May 2009 at 6am to meet a CRAZY bunch of high adventure seekers at the Engen one stop on the N7. Giz and I had bike problems which delayed us in joining the group but later that arvie joined up in Vanrhynsdorp after they had finished lunch. Only once we fell in, did we start relaxing and enjoying the outing. Geoff informs me there were 19 bikes, three pillions and with Abie and his son John totaled 25 people at Jurg se Kaia. This is the picture of the wild, wild west ......................coast tour of May 2009: Its always always about the peopleThis is the picture of the wild, wild west ......................coast tour of May 2009: Its always always about the people

Beemer+ wife=?

My wife became the proud owner of a F650GS on Saturday morning. Thanks Dave, Ruan and Kie for excellent service. Lizl got her bikers license when her father allowed her to use his old Vespa as a student. That was some time ago and she did not touched the handlebars of a bike since then. Cheesy was at hand at Auto Atlantic for the motivational speech. The right man at the right spot! Auto AtlanticAuto Atlantic I took her to an open piece of grass next to the road about one block down the road from Auto Atlantic where I quickly showed her the basics. We have done the rider and pillion course and she has been a pillion on a number of Beemer excursions. She exercised pulling away, turning around and changing the gears. After about 15 mins, she told me I should go and fetch my GSA. I had to walk back to Auto Atlantic!!!

Atlantic Motorrad BMW MCC Cape West Coast Tour

The BMW M/C Club in conjunction with Atlantic Motorrad invite you on our last West Coast Tour of 2007. This trip has always been the most popular tour we arrange so you will need to book early to avoid disappointment! The plan for this trip is an early departure on the Friday morning from CT and head towards Citrusdal then towards Klawer via some dirt sections. From Klawer we would head to Van Rhynsdorp for lunch (own expense) then towards Bitterfontein then via the back roads to Kotzesrus and from here to the coast and to Silwerdoos, arriving mid afternoon. Silwerdoos or Jurg se Kaya, is a very rustic cabin right on the beach and has basic facilities such as, shower, toilet, undercover braai/entertainment area, and lots of mattresses that we put in the outbuildings to sleep on. It can accommodate 22 people. Take your own sleeping bag and pillow, that goes with your bag in the back up vehicle.

West Coast Trip - a lady rider's perspective

Most of you have probably read Andy’s report. This trip was already diarised at the end of Feb 2007. Once it had dawned on me that Andy was fully expecting me to come along, and we had paid in March, I had to try and prepare my mind for it. There was simply no turning back. You might laugh at this, but at this stage, I had only been on the road as a new rider for just under 2 months. I couldn’t even do corners and tight turns… Max taught me how in April. My 1st long trip on tar, which also ended up on gravel, was 2 weeks after I started learning to ride. We did a trip up to Wilderness and back, “back” being the long way around 4 dusty passes between Knysna and George. I think I didn’t drive more than 25kms/hour. I think my heart was in my mouth most of the way. 2x2ing is VERY different to 4x4ing!
