I get so terribly upset every time I see how we, the consumer, is loaded with inflated pricing. Saturday I was riding on the N2 when I noticed a very good looking 1150GS exactly as my GeelKameel. The rider & I stopped in Durbanville to chat. I commented on his good looking (neat & clean, ~65000km) bike, and noticed a dent near the tank top. The story he told me gave me the shivers - He had a fall, bending the steering tube & distorted the instrument panel, dents to the tank & broken windshield. Otherwise fine. The bike was written off due to repairs that was to cost R55000. He tried to buy the bike back, to no avail. Repairs more expensive than the value of the bike.... owner cannot buy back... Many months later he heard that his bike was on its way to be taken apart for spares, and where the bike was at the time. He went there & managed to buy his bike back (as assembled spares, I presume?). That is all well, until I heard he said that he fixed the bike as I see it there in front of me, for less than R5000! '''Why on earth was it written off in the first place!!!! Why R55k for repairs?''' Not only because the genuine parts are so heluva expensive, also because the "rules of the marque" assumes we are full of money (otherwise we would not ride their brand). And they want to replace all damage plus each and every little component that ''may'' be affected by the fall. All at high cost of spares. And the insurance premium is quick to follow, meeting the cost of spares. En ons moet maar hoes.... PS last year I had my GK serviced at a dealer. While collecting it, I saw a cleaner struggling with a huge cardboard box that had torn open. Inside were plenty car parts, used filters etc. Among everything was a set of GSA panniers, on their way to the dumpsite. Many many GS riders would love to get them, fix them & use them. Yet the "rules" dictate that it become dumped to waste.

I fitted SBS pads on my 1200RT and have used those pads at high speeds. No problem! These are comsumable parts as is your battery, tyres, etc These pads are used for racing on Japanese bikes, tested by me in wet and dry conditions. I can recommend these pads without hesitation. And remember, pads are critical components.. Don't waste space - live on the edge

Just a small caution in this thread The recommended BMW pad is a Sintered Metal material which is more costly to manufacture. There are options in the aftermarket for Organic Material Pads which will appear to be far more cost effective on the pocket. The choice remains yours to Buy or not to Buy. Sintered metal is the only material used on the race bikes as the Organic cannot handle the heat. Regards Your reach must be further than your grasp....

It's really just a case of Brembo being Italian and their silly export duties making everything exotic and pricey.

They do however last longer, but I'm also a believer in SBS.

Try R2700 for a pair of rear brake shoes from BMW for a 1980 R65.

R550 from SBS.

BMW IS a rip off.
