Hi Guys...just wanted to know if anyone has had a differential bearing colapse on a 1200 GS '09 model. My one has 70000 on the clock and it seems odd that this has hapened with this kind of  mileage since the bike does not even touch a dirt road and it hapened with no prior warning like a gear oil leak or something. Well know I am stuck with a completely damaged diff, caliper and rear disc break to the valuye of R33000-00 excl labour. Can I take this up with BMW ??

I do not think that it is a weak point but have been known to fail. You can try Acme in JHB for 2nd hand parts.

Hoping to avoid this matter I have switched to synthetic oils and change every 10,0Km. I also feel for play in the rear wheel by sitting on my tail with hands gripping the wheel at 09-00 and 15-00Hrs  and with sideways movement feel for possible free play.

Hope this makes sense.

My 08 1200GSA in in for diff bearing replacement. Jandre is doing the job.

The bearing was quite badly worn with considerable sideplay on the back wheel when on the centre stand.

This was confirmed by Donford Cape Town and Jandre'.

I bought the GSA in January this year after selling my 1150GS, which i had ridden for 8 trouble - free years and 90000k's.

This bike had done 30000kms and has now done 41500 kms.

It has not been used it on any major off road trips although i know that the previous owner did quite a lot of off road riding.

I am quite grumpy about this major repair at such a low mileage and have heard that this is a weak point on the bike although not normally a failure on a bike that is still a teenager!!

Anyone else with similar problems????sad

The main bearing in the diff of my previous 1150GS ('2000 model) failed at 42000km. The rear wheel started to wobble when riding. Repaired as soon as I discovered the problem.

Replacement of the bearing was around R1500 (2006).

That GS now has done close to 150000km, perfectly free of any trouble.
