Whether you actually have a desire to use these skills on your next adventure, or you just want to know what to do when confronted by a low water bridge.

Maybe you just want to know these essential techniques so that riding out in the cuds is less fearsome.

Make use of this opportunity, it will not happen again for quite a while.

And if you would like to come forward to do the catering and the selling of the boerie rolls, we really need two people to come forward.

Please see this session in context of all the vlauable off road and road riding courses offered as  a set of supplementary essential specialist skills that we will share to enable you to push on with a trip across country despite setbacks of water, terrain and break downs.

And even if you are not ready for adventure riding, you will see how possible it is to keep on going despite set backs.

Up in Namibia we were met with numerous water crossings. Fortunately we had Pete O'Hanlon to lead the way....

Neville du Toit starting off on a good line, lost it and recovered

Pete was asked if he would take Trevor King's bike across....."sure" he says....and promptly drops it

and that's Trevor in the background !

Some people we just abandoned

So glad this thread made me look up these old pics....good memories

Very disappointed at not being able to attend this due to other commitments.  Looks like exceptional value and will be a lot of fun....especially in light of the recent discovery that my BMW insurance policy does not cover me for breakdown quite as well as I thought it did.  To all the instructors and those attending.....have a great deal of fun, folks.

Yes bring cash if you want to buy tow ropes, and tools.

bookings are only firm once payment is made before the day.

We will have some 12 riders in each group.

So to control it all we need payment to confrim.

After 36 entrants we start the waiting lists.

I will only print the certificates and laminate them once we have payment.

Hi. Sorry won't he able to come anymore. My baby sprung a leak today. So water pump seals, shaft and impeller going in on Saturday. Was first a little drop of fluid out the weep hole, now a fair amount. Apologies. If I'm done in time will swing past and check watch from the side lines.

Bookings are full.

The weather God's are really making water for some reason, although there is plenty enough already.

Sunday's weather will be on the chilly side, so dress accordingly.

Here are the GPS co-ordinates    S33° 45.784' E018° 42.744'

Take the R302 out of Durbanville towards Klipheuvel & Fisantekraal.

6.5 km from the Langeberg lights you pass the turn-off for the R312 Fisnatekraal road and Paarl.

Pass this and 2,5 km later you see the sign MELLISH directing right.

You have arrived.

The club banners should make you feel at home.

Dismount and grab a cuppa coffee at the gazebo.

We will check you on the list and give you a wrist band.

Candidates will be divided into three groups.

There are three stations, each with its own session.

Two trainers will be allocated to each group.

Each group and trainer will rotate from one station to the next.

  1. Water crossing
  2. Self rescue
  3. Towing and trailering a bike

Jean and Nelmarrie will make and sell boerie rolls and cooldrinks.

Please remember to bring your folding chair along.

Then I made the next fatal error of trying to re-start the engine while the starter was under the water...... and cooked the battery terminally.!!!

My trusty friend on her 650 towed me out of trouble and tow-started me every time thereafter, until we found a new battery- but the adventure stayed alive.

TOW AND JUMP STARTING A VERY DEAD ROMMEL IN THE NAMIBIAN DESERTTOW AND JUMP STARTING A VERY DEAD ROMMEL IN THE NAMIBIAN DESERT

Learning all the lessons from a blood nose. Out in the Namibian desert, literally 150 kilometers from the nearest town.

Annie's 650 just could not pull the 1150 in the soft dunes  at speed, and when I dropped the clutch, the dune sand offered no traction so the back wheel just locked and dragged.

Trying to turn the engine over with cheap jump leads was not successful on a cold engine in the early morning. the flimsy tinny jaws could not make a sound enough contact to the temrinals and the  cable itself was rated too low to be of material use.

Once warmed up, they were juuuuuusssst about OK.

I left Annie in the shade of a hastily erected tent with all the gear and I rode out to a farm on her 650 to persuade a farmer to come with his bakkie and welding machine leads to jump start the 1150.

Not having good jumper cables cost us half a day- out on the desert in 36ºC dry heat, and had us both speaking swahili fluently and closer to divorce than ever before.

Oh I wish there had been crash course training for me back then.....

7 years later we ride with impunity, anywhere at any time and no mishap can slow us done more than momentarily!

We've learned the many lessons, built up the correct kit over the years and chosen to keep the adventures alive...

Thank you all for braving the chill and everyone attended.

Only 2 apologies. i rerplacement

Special thanks to Annamarie for doing all the admin and sorting the indemnities out.

Thanks to Jean and Nelmarie for the catering, It was great.

Thanks to the trainers for all the preparation and the patience and especially the willingness to share your knowledge.

Thank you very much.

This would not have been fun without all the interaction and participation from all of you who attended.

Just your interaction made all the effort worthwhile

This should be an annual club event. It can only get better.

If you have constructive feedback, please mail me on andy@abarc.co.za

We can only improve if you give good constructive feedback on how and where.

I had the towing straps and the webbing loops  made up and I tried to persuade two DS motorbike accesory shops to take this on board.

Sadly they both feel they are too busy to investigate yet another product.

So if you are disappointed by being at the wrong place when the 7 I did have were made available, I am prepared to have more made up.

Please let me know by email and I'll do it at the same price.

Those that left before we woke up to the certificates, they will be at the club meeting on Tuesday night.

Marius, Fenwick, Pete, thanks for recovering the bike from the icy waters and braving the crocodiles and frosen legs.  If I ever go to war, I want you on my team.

To all of you who brought your family and kids along- thank you very much, I hope they enjoyed being outdoors and meeting the people you hang out with.

Thank you, especially, to the organisers and presenters for the effort and preparation. These things do not happen by itself. We appreciate your initiative and the time that you have spent to make this event happen.

Well done and thank you Anna-Marie, Nel-Marie, Andy, Arno, Charles, Jean, John, Neels and Pete for a rich, enjoyable, learning experience. Thanks also to all my "classmates" for your contributions through your active participation in the event.

A special thanks to Admiral Connell, Rear Admiral O'Hanlon and Seaman Fenwick for going beyond the call of duty to demonstrate the recovery and resuscitation of a "sunken ship".

I agree. The training was insightful, professional and a kind reminder of the preparations one should make before a trip.

I liked the notion that one should "take apart" the bike with the tools you carry to see whether you could perform all the tasks at the side of the road.
