Things that go bump on the ride

I do a 40 km round-trip commute to work on my bike every day, with the 3 - 4 km section closest to home, in relatively heavy traffic in both directions. I make the most of the limited opportunities to overtake or lane-split in this section by practising my "slow racing".

Thank goodness for that! This afternoon I noticed a pronounced front wheel bump but, surprisingly, only when going really, really slowly. It disappeared completely when the speed increased to anything beyond a crawl. This is what I found on inspection at home.

This tyre, a 110/80-19 Mitas E10, has covered exactly 10 997 km since it was fitted, as new, on the 19th of April 2016

On the plus side, that's some pretty good mileage on an E10. I typically only get around 12-12500 on an E07.

But that's one of the the most bizarre things I've seen - and a bit scary too. It suggests something gone wrong on the inner face of the tyre - which I've never seen wear.  It would be fascinating to see how it looks on the inside.

I wonder if you'll have better grip on the Kaya's driveway?

surprise

Hi Mwendo - not sure where you bought the tyre, but if you want any help in seeking info on WHY it may have occurred, pop in and see me; we can phone the importers together, etc.

(does NOT matter if you did not get it from Flying Brick, I would like to make that call anyway...)

Cheers, Chris & Team

I took off the front wheel, immediately after taking the above photos yesterday, lugged it to Donford STB (Donford did not supply the Mitas E10 to me) this morning, and had a TKC-80 fitted.

I contacted the local supplier of the E10 this morning and pointed him at this thread. I wish to point out, and I made this clear to the supplier (and subsequently to the importer/distributor) when I called, that I did not do so with any intent other than to bring the matter to their attention i.e. I did not, and have no desire to, lodge a claim of any kind.

I dropped off the E10 at the suppliers premises, at their request, on my way home with the newly shod front wheel.

The response I've had to date has been encouraging. I received a call from a gentleman, whom I believe represents the importer and/or distributor of the tyre, within an hour of dropping it off. While he did not make any promises to this effect, he suggested that he will take up the matter with the manufacturer with a view to make a warranty claim.

I expect to hear from him, or the supplier, during the next few days.

Hi Mwendo

Had a similar experience with my K100RT midway between Beaufort West and Colesberg, (read between nowhere and somewhere) on my way to Bloem during 2014 . Cruising along at 170-180 k I felt a slight vibration building from the rear. I pulled off and found on closer inspection a bubble similar to yours on my Michelin Anakee's with about 2500 km mileage on them. Must add it was a piping hot karoo summers day, about six beers a sitting, hot. I phoned around and the closest replacement was in Bloem. I decided to wait for my lift from Bloem, in Hanover but could only reach Richmond before the tread completely separated, breaking off large patches of rubber. This was at slow speed, 60-70 kph. Not nice with all the big trucks thundering past. The explanation from the tyre company in Bloem was that I must have had a puncture through the tread, but not all the way through the casing (metal part) causing the separation, no claim.

Wow, CobusC, you win, that is one nasty bubble! surprise

I must confess that I would not be inclined to "let it go" after only 2500km, on tar.

You are 100% correct Andyman. More than one week has elapsed without any further contact from either the supplier or the importer/distributor!
