Slightly faster breakfast run 6th December '09

Geoff Russell's picture
This ride was arranged after requests from members. It in no way takes the place of our ever popular "breakfast" runs but does give members the choice of an extra ride between the normal breakfast rides. Once the invite went out the ride was quickly full with a waiting list. The format of this ride was to take no more than 12 bikes so filling it was easy. The group led by myself consisted of long standing members as well as a lady rider who has just joined the Club. We all met at the Engen in Plattekloof at 0700. Just before departure we had a pre trip briefing where the do's and dont's of the ride were discussed. It was emphasized that the ride was in no way a race and that overtaking between the passes was not allowed. At 0715 we departed and our route took us to the Bothasig Circle, past Richwood on our way to Contermanskloof then on to the N7 to the Philadelphia turn off. Riding this road in the early morning is always a treat as you get all the different smells from the farms something one never appreciates when in a car. From here we took the Perdeberg Road towards Wellington. Being very early we had minimal traffic. From Wellington we went up the deserted Bainskloof pass, down the other side past the Calabash Bush Pub then right towards Worcester and right again to Rawsonville then onto the N1 to DuToits Kloof Lodge where I had booked breakfast. On our arrival they were expecting us and we were shown our tables with a beautiful view over the majestic mountains. The service was reasonably quick and the prices were very reasonable. The Lodge is under new management and it certainly shows. The breakfast was great. Just after 0900we departed towards Cape Town and rode over DuToits kloof pass. We were again fortunate to have little traffic so we were able to traverse the pass with little interruption. At the bottom of the Pass we turned left towards Victor Verster prison on our way to Franschoek. As we neared the village the traffic started to increase and we saw lots of bikes of all makes, shapes and sizes. I was amazed at how many riders/pillions were riding in shorts T shirts and slops......................EINA.....should they fall. I was also taken aback by how many riders did not greet us despite us greeting them. Those that needed gas filled up in Franschoek and Rony went ahead to find a nice corner to take pictures of the group as we past by. The pass was reasonably quite but from the top down there was a lot of oil/diesel on the road meaning we had to take it very easy. We had a quick stop on the Bridge over the Thierwaterskloof Dam. it was stunning...........no wind and not a ripple on the water. From here we headed for Grabouw passing many bikes coming towards us. We joined the N2 heading down towards Bot River and the road to Hermanus. We had barely turned off when most of us were pulled over by a group of traffic cops. They checked our bikes and licenses and sent us on our merry way. A very friendly bunch. On our way towards Rooi Els we passed lots of bikes going in both directions, again many riders in T shirts & slops...........GGrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! Past Rooi Els we encountered very heavy traffic traveling in both directions forcing us to ride quite slowly and pass lots of car's. It was in a corner just before Koel Bay that one of the guys had just passed a car and was breaking for a corner, his front wheel touched an oil patch causing his front end to wash away and he and his bike slid off the road and down a grassy embankment. The rider was uninjured but his bike was quite badly damaged. I called Andy Connell and him and Mark Burton arrived with a trailer and some much needed refreshments. We loaded the bike and Martin hopped on the back of my bike and I dropped him at home. Other than this incident it was a very enjoyable ride. I am sure that Rony and others will post some pictures. Nice report Geoff - I am looking forward to some pictures. Is it true that there were only GSes on the ride and no road bikes? Website Administrator [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]

Sheez, this is up quickly, I guess it is the earliest you have arrived home in a long time!:-) I'm just back from the family lunch....Father's birthday. I really enjoyed this ride, except for the one thing obviously.:-( The early start was great, the pace nice, weather same, and breakfast the cheapest I've had in a while R30 incl R5 tip, yes there were some comments...muesli and tea with my pink shirt!!:-) It was a nice run as everyone was of a similar pace and the group not too large, but then I often like riding alone or just Jane and I. Heading up Franschoek I had proof you don't always go where you look....., unbeknown to me, Rony went ahead and positioned himself in that VERY tight hairpin , at the apex, so there I was just behind Yolandi, looking for the over-take gap when I spy a photographer...only later heard it was Rony!!!Nice idea you ought to have some incredible pics!! At Tierwaterskloof the solitude from the still waters was magnificent, just as looking at the mountains from the balcony at our breakfast stop!!!The Silence!!! The ride along Rooi Els to Gondon's bay was a slow weave as by now the cars were everywhere, so it was a Huge shock to come around a sweeping bend to be flagged to a stop...The visitors to the camp site were already at the bike, out with my tow straps, and with some of picnickers and the guys on the ride, a bit of pushing and pulling, and the bike was on the verge in a few moments....Martin was okay, some were with him and I spent time slowing the traffic down. Geoff came back, and organised a trailer, I left at that point to make the family lunch. Martin all the best, may Sonja be gentle on your ears!:-)

Martin recons his reception at home after I dropped him off was icy to say the least. I have just called him and he says it is now feeling decidedly like a deep freeze. His wife, he says, is talking to him in grunts!!!!!!! I am on the way with some blankets and firewood!!!!

Thanks Geoff and everyone else for the awesome ride! The weather was perfect, and the scenery was just beautiful. I must admit that my bum was starting to feel the distance we travelled. Nothing major though. :-) Shame Martin, hope you can walk tomorrow! It was like something out of a movie, a stuntman trick. Just after Martin passed me (luckily no cars at that moment), I saw everything happen in slow motion right in front of me. I must say he rolled quite "gently". Like it was not hot enough (33 degrees), I ran to Martin to see if he's ok, with him wanting to get up immediately! Very worried about his bike, and still wanting to jump back on and continue. It was interesting to see how quick the tow truck stopped at the scene! We showed him how it is done. 123 and the bike was standing alongside the road. Other than that, it really was an unbelievable experience. Stunning day. Thanks guys! Ps... Next time remind me not to forget sunscreen...ouch! ...Stand up, look up and open up!!...

Good morning everyone Thanks to Geoff for a well organized BF run. I really enjoyed every moment (corner!) of the run. I was just behind Yolandi when Martin went down. First time in my life that I saw someone going down in front of me. Amazing how time slows down and everything happens in slow motion. Martin, I hope you are feeling ok today! Rony, thanks for the great pictures. Will we be able to get the full size pictures from you? Looking forward to the next one!!

I forgot to mention one very important thing in my previous posting - the importance of wearing your full ATGATT all the time. Looking at Matin's gear it just reminded me again of how important it is. His helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, and even his boots took a severe beating. Without his protective gear we would have been visiting him in hospital today.

Thanks Geoff for a great ride - and to all the others that came along. There is a need for slightly faster runs and I must say that everyone was very disciplined except myself where I overtook on the N2 thinking that it is already part of the Du Toit Kloof Pass. (Please forgive me) Sorry for the mishap with Martin but we all know that this can happen to everyone. I hope the ice at your house starts melting and we can see you back on the bike soon. We were by the way 3 road bikes. Stop for visor cleaningStop for visor cleaning www.wode.co.zaMartin & Geoff: Martin OK, thanks to ATGATTMartin & Geoff: Martin OK, thanks to ATGATT

Thanks for the great pictures Guys. Neil.......Martin did invite me in when I dropped him off however "discretion was definitely the better part of valour" so I tucked my tail between my legs and went home. I am however reliably informed that the "grunts" have progressed to a deathly silence now. I have offered him my spare room. He recons however the Rottweiler kennel is looking better every minute!!

To all the guys and girl from yesterday-thanks for a great morning, breakfast, and ride. Martin, I hope you get over your incident quickly enough to see you on the next ride. I must add that being on the smallest machine in the group was a tad intimidating, especially on the longer straights. The 800 obviously doesn't have the speed of the 1200's but I managed to stay "alive" (or lively?) in the tight corners of the passes. Yolandi, clearly you didn't grow up with dolls and tea parties :-). Thanks for organising Geoff. Pete Mann

Wolf please forgive Geoff for not counting you in as a road bike, but you have ridden so many gravel driveways and the Nelsons Creek Entrance Challenge, we look at you as a GS, at least Jane and I do!:-)

Riding at the back playing sweeper meant at times I had to catch up and I must be honnest my knobblies did the job, Dont know however if the wear was equivalent to 2 or 3 thousand kilometers on this trip! Hi Guys and Doll, Thanks for all the well wishes. It has been an awesome ride, unfortunate for the minor hiccup. It is amazing to experience help and support from people you met for the first time, and others you know a while. Even Andy and Mark who gave up their Sunday afternoon to fetch the bike. I hope that Rhodric and Yolandi is feeling better. Yolandi baie dankie vir jou hulp en aanmoediging, en die Coke. I wish you guys could have seen this, she orders the spectators to get me some Coke, although they were very reluctant at first, it was their only mix, they shared with me. Wolfgang thanks for your support. It is much appreciated. And once again Geoff, for being the utmost professional, with the pills, the bandages, the organising, the water, and the lift home. The Dr this morning confirmed everything is still in place, just the body that feels as if it was hit by a 10 ton truck. I hope to see you guys on the road again soon. Again thanks to everyone. I am really going to miss that black GS.

Glad you all had a good trip. Sorry we couldn't make it as we had a run to Stilbaai to run in our rental fleet of Suzuki's. Martin, glad you are alright. It gives one a terrible fright but, as you say, having a great bunch of people around who know what to do and how to take action makes things so much better. Rest is your friend now.
