Road blocks

Sunday 26 August 2007 saw another roadblock on the N1. The second week in a row. Personally I would like to see more roadblocks and less unroadworthy vehicles. I have to wonder about these roadblocks though. For every car (clearly destined for the scrapheap) that was pulled over, about 20 bikes were pulled over and scrutinized. At what point does this become victimisation? Surely all people/vehicles should be treated equally. In another article I have also mentioned the blond cop that then got all stroppy about me taking photo's at the scene of the roadblock - threatening to confiscate my camera if I did not put it away immediately. Clearly the cops have realized that we are soft targets that can contribute to their christmas fund, and it would appear that we will be seeing many more roadblocks in the months to come. What are the actual rules governing such a roadblock? What may the cops do? And what may we do? Thanks to everyone in our group that behaved so well, in spite of ....

Binne sekondes is ek afgetrek deur 'n padpoliesman. Jus - I'd say take this to court and defend yourself. Except that practically, you'll spend a day or more in court and might well lose anyway. Look, if you have the time you might do it for the fun of it. Me, I don't have the time and would just pay admission of guilt and laugh up my sleeve every time I split those lanes stukkend, jaag smouse out the way while riding to the front of the queue at the traffic light, and take a shortcut through the vlei... ;-) My brother has spent R750 000 and 3 years defending himself against a R300 fine, because he is in the right, and because it is malicious prosecution, and because to admit guilt would mean he cannot run his business anymore (wildlife permits won't be issued if guilty of a violation). Go for it Daaaannniiiee! regards Charles

Spoke to a contact with the traffic police and he tells me they are under huge pressure to clamp down on guys riding their bikes without number plates specifically as well as with "illegal" plates. Hence all the action against the bikers. There was a lot about bikers vs cops on Cape Talk radio this morning. The clampdown will continue for some time.

Ek wil nog uitvind hoe Andy daai foto's, so in die ry, neem.

Unroadworthy cars. There is an edict out to all Metro police since last eyar already to be lenient on sedan cars driven by pdi's which do not conform to a 'raodworthy' status. they will not admit But I've heard this from the bellville chief. Reason is is they take off all the unroadworthy vehicles operated by our PDI's, much of the blue-collar labour force in the Western cape will not get to work, simply because of our apalling non-existent public transport system. FACT. We live with it. Bikers on the other hand are assumed to be rich boys with expensive toys. P.S. Padlangs, as part of project B012- Loose gravel I do also send them photos of the many metro patrol cars that do not conform and wear belts are not worn. They take no notice. .Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.

Ek kry elke oggend 'n escort tot by my werk teen gemiddeld 130Km/h. Soms self 160Km/h. Ek volg hulle want ek weet hulle sal nie so vinnig ry as daar 'n kamera of ander metode van spoedbeheer is nie. Gawe manne, hierdie METRO COPS. Jy moet net saam met hulle ry.

Definitely some sort of witch hunt against anything on two wheels at the moment. This morning, coming off the N1 on to the M5 at the dreaded Koeberg Interchange, I see lots of bikes been pulled off. The guys going into Paarden Island off the M5. Not sure if they are getting fined for going thru traffic and then 'crossing' white line. These wankers see us as easy money but in the meanwhile we're helping with traffic congestion and fuel... Anyway talking about irritation...what are they going to do about our infamous KOEBERG INTERCHANGE??? Whoever designed that piece of interchange must be tied down in the middle of the road and then slowly driven over in rush hour traffic!!! and another !

This morning waiting under the beging of the M3 bridge into town, two tinted mini vans (the ones they sit in when on camera duty). Guy jumps out and pulls the King-cab infront of me of! why I don't know? But the cop was wearing is blues with no refective material on. Question, as i rode past. Was he a cop? what if i drove on? With now days hijacks and attacks is it safe to bepulled over in such a manner?

Dare I comment on the police van that nearly took me out last night? No siren, no blue lights, just weaving around like a drunk, with people in the back - hold the door open. No need to talk about him driving on at 80+ in a 60 zone. While this happened another new cop car was driving around with only one headlight working.

Our Master and Comander, the Honourable Dave Higgs made it onto page 8 of the Weekend Argus - Sunay Edition. Large article about the recent spate of road blocks. Even a photo of a cop-car without number plates - at the road block!!! Apparently the cops were again out in full force this weekend. At least the road block in the Blouberg area pulled over cars as well. All over bikes were being pulled over! What ever your feelings about this - ensure your bike (and number plate) is fully legal in the months to come.

Had a lovely trip to work again today. Although I was traveling in my cage We managed to travel on the N2 from the Spine offramp to Pinelands at about 140 - 150 Km/h. The metro police car in front of me cleared the road by every now and then flashed his headlights at cars in front of him to get them out of the way. Even at stretches near the airport where the speedlimit was 100Km/h he managed to at times travel at 150Km/h. Al this happened without any sirens or even flashing the blue lights. Such a nice country to live in where the people that must protect the innocent and set an example can do whatever they want without any problem.

Got some interesting info. :) The article in the Weekend Argus (previous weekend) shows a photo of a cop car with out a number plate at the scene of a road block. Apparently a group of Harleys were pulled over. While part of the group were getting written up, some others removed the number plates from the cop car. The story goes on, the cops relised this just after the group left and set off in hot pursuit. When the Harleys were pulled over, the poor sods still had the cop plates with them. Ouch!! Would be interesting to hear where this ends.
