RIDE MARSHAL  DATABASE - ARE YOU INTERESTED?

I would like to put together a database of ride marshals from which we can draw as a platform for the next few months.

Rate of payment is R400 per event.

Every marshal must have on the event day:-

-  a BMW club vest

-  two 2-way radios (bike to comissaire)

-  Daglo orange marshal armband (worn on left upper sleeve).

What you do not have, can be loaned to you by the club.

For each event, one marshal is designated the leader and will do buddy check on each marshal to ensure you are kitted out and gear is recovered and organisers are informed.

There are often bikes with cameramen and other marshals from another organisations.

BMW is the lead in the intiative. you will immediately see a big difference in attitude.

Here is the basic drill:--

Marshals report to the event organiser half an hour before the start.

You will be given the route map and the emergency numbers. please dial this in to your phone

Briefing starts shortly thereafter.

Those with radios, give one to your course comissairre so you can communicate easily.

The basic cardinal points of marshal duty

Safety is the most important. you are there to keep cyclists safe before you do anything else.

  • Cyclists may not slipstream cars or gain any unnatural advantages.
  • Cyclists may not slipstream you, so keep clear of them they will try get into your slip stream, slow down out of the situation,  not speed up away from it if they are close, you just give the cyclist more pull by speeding up.
  • Cyclists must keep left inside the solid white line.
  • Ride with the main group, herd the rogue cyclists back firmly into the left lane. (Cyclist race circuits are laid out to avoid any right-hand (across traffic) turns.
  • Watch out for route change and guidance instructions from static flag marshals.
  • Net-in with with your comissaire car - telephone or radio (if you have a radio link with them)
  • You can roam up and down the main group to warn cyclists.
  • This is a competition, if cyclists break the solid line rule deliberately to gain advantage you may red card them, give the number to your commisarie over the radio or at least give it in at the end of the race.
  • If the group starts to overtake the tail-enders of the previous group ahead of them, those tail-enders must drop 20 meters back from your group so as not to gain slipstream advantage and rest. You go to a cyclist and tell him to drop back. The catch up is so gradual you have plenty time to earmark him/her and keep an eye on them.
  • All objections must be given to the organisers within 20 minutes of completion to be valid. No race number, no objection.
  • Please ride safely, responsibly and give yourself the chance to get home safe.
  • Enjoy the event. you play an important role, use your initiative.

If the BMW club treasurer Natalie does not have your bank details you will not get paid. Send same by email to Natalie.

We will give you the Daglo orange armband and we have some radios on hand as well, please return them directly.

This will improve your riding skills by several notches.

If interested please mail me full details Name, mobile, mail

You already have my detail.

Some questions that would help me and others:

What are the arrangements to get hold of the radios before an event? (who keeps them, where do we collect them...)

I have the MotoTooth wireless comms unit on my helmet - what is better ... to pair it with the radios that we loan from the club, or to use the club radio with a wired earpiece in one's ear.

Does the club radio have a push-to-talk button that can be quickly mounted to the handlebar?

I moved the questions on the Runbo X5 to your thread on radio comms Smile

We have two full radio sets that are quick mount with ptt on handlebar.

And we have a few just radios -

I give the armbands and whatever to the nearest person and they do waht is necessary.

Wirelss Pair Bluetooth is better than earpice and wires. Takes only a mjnute or two if you move away from possible intereference with other blue tooth devices.

Can be frustrating & soul destryoing if you try any 1st time pairing activity within range of other random devices onside a 10 meter radius of you.

I think the Runbo deserves a totally separate forum post.

Sorry, the vests belong to the club and we use them to loan out on the day.

They will soon join the go-bag of radios, armbands and the other vests.

Charles is just temproray custodian.
