Radio communications is becoming more and more popular on bikes, but there are some risks involved and many expensive lessons that have already been learnt which can save you lots of money if you are thinking of going down this route.

Andy Connell and I shall be holding a Radio Workshop at Ruslamere in Durbanville on Wed 22 Feb at 19:00

If you are interested, book on the forum or sms me on 083 375 1299

We will be dealing with the use of radios in three modules:

1  Legally speaking, what is required (and the club frequency applicaiton process under way)

2  The practical realities one needs to know to get the most out of your radio communications

3 Blue tooth interface systems on the market and how to manage them.

Peter is a trained electronics enigneer in low current and has specialised in radio comms for over 20 years in the S&R field.

Andy has also got more than 20 years experience in radio comms, radio networks, S&R and both have collected  many tips that will help you get effective use out of a radio network.

We have filtered the jargon into plain English/Afrikaans for the layman so that you will not trip over big words and wide concepts.

Andy and Pete, thanks for a very informative evening. I learnt alot.

I am now very much looking  forward to the future plans for the club and radios.

Thanks also to Rusty for the use of your Conference facility at Ruslamere, much appreciated.

This was a very interesting, informative and practical talk.  I aways learn lots at this type of workshop.

Apart from everything else that I learned, I now realise that I must stay away from bluetooth and go for gadgets that link with wires. Otherwise I will quickly go demented.

Thanks to Pete and Andy for a very informative evening and to Rusty for the use of an excellent venue.

Thanks Andy and Pete for another information packed evening. As always you both had lots of hilarious stories to illustrate the do's and dont's on both the hardware and etiquette of radio comms.

Thanks also to Rusty for allowing us to use your comfortable venue.

Let it be.

I missed this - tried scanning the FM channel on my amp but could not pick up the broadcast. Perhaps the wrong frequency? Tongue out

Tony, you really missed something good.  Pete even used his head as a parabolic anntenna - and it worked.

Geoff

I once saw a Top Gear programme where Jeremy Clarkson walked away from a Merc until the remote would no longer lock / unlock the car. He then walked 2 x the distance, held the remote against his head and voila....the car unlocked !

What does this prove...thet Pete and Jeremy both have nothing, to obstruct good signals, inside their heads ? Just a thought.Laughing

I know this thread is very old, but if I should go and buy a 2 way radio for the bike what will it be and whom do I contact.

Thanks

Marais,

Go down the road to www.bike2bike.co.za, Janet Stuart, and chat to them about what we have found works best.

2-way coms using protbale radios is certainly not every persons cup of tea and many give up on them.

Those that break thru the pain barrier of getting it all sorted really do enjoy being able to chat.

We have an ICASA registered club frequency. on VHF,

yuo will find those thta kept their radios use them to comunicate, not to say anything tha cropts up, so there are very long periods of silence.

But when we need to talk, we do.

On organised club tours, it is always nice to eavesdrop on the ride leader and back-up vehicle to get the dynamics of whats going down, also to listen the the ride leader and his scout, whom he dispatches down paths and gullies to check if it is doable and what will be required to get everyone across an obstacle.

They use it as a coms toll and they do it well.

On our small group rides of 4 maybe 5 bikes, you find almost everyone is in radio contact and they use the radio for coordination & to arrange spontaneous route changes or to control a vehicle that pissed off another of the group.

Its useful for synching the group (smoke breaks, photo stops, pit stops etc) and for pointing out real and present dangers or landmarks, otherwise most of the time the ether is quiet.

But you probably can identify with this from your 4x4 experiences.

If there is chatter, then it equals 'noise' and I switch it off.
