Mr. Badger Leads his first Breakfast Run

A great ride. My first as club captain. I practised all of yesterday, doing the route via Du Toit's and via Bain's. I decided to take the group via Bain's (less freeway riding) and decided to take the scenic route through Monte Vista and Durbanville - an area I do not have a passport for. We took the Conterman's kloof road, which entered Durbanville from an angle I did not practise or know about. So for about 5 minutes I was lost... Then I recognized a traffic light and realized I should have turned left a block ago. Brian Messenger also realized this and rode alongside me to 'guide' me back onto the straight and narrow. The rest of the ride went as planned: Wellington Road out of Durbanville, past the model aeroplane club, the cemetary, Cape Town Radio then right onto the R312 past fisantekraal. We turned left onto the R44 close to Nelson's Creek, then rode through Wellington and onto Bain's Kloof Pass. Mr. Badger played up something terrible, stuttering like a speach impediment, making some of the turns quite interesting... At the top of Bain's road repairs had left a lot of loose grit on the road surface, and after we slipped a bit everybody turned off the heat a bit until the surface was clean. Corne raced ahead through the twisties and waited at the bottom. After Bains we turned right onto the road to Worcester, and waited for the tail-enders to catch up. Andyman had offered to ride sweep and was wearing a Think Bike vest and his orange head-lamp lenses. I could spot him arrive a mile and half-hour away (esp. because he stood most of the time, making the vest even more visible). We turned right onto the Slanghoek scenic drive, crossed the low-level bridge and were soon turning into the Opstal Wine Estate. The breakfast was particularly heartening. We had coffee in urns laid on, juice on the tables, and were served scrambled eggs on toast, mushrooms, bacon, tomato and what tasted like kudu wors. After adding a tip and dividing in coffees and juice we each paid R70. I had planned it so that those going to the track this afternoon could scoot away along the N1 via Du Toit's Kloof (or tunnel if time was tight) and get back quickly via a different route than the trip there. Yet again a superb ride with the club. Thanks to all who attended. As for the newcomers - I hope you enjoyed the trip with us and join us for a few more.
