Thanks to the marshals.

This was a well organised event, plenty static marshals.

Plenty RSC and minicipal traffic officers.

5 categories

Each category had a commissaire who clearly identified themself with their marshals

Good solid briefing,

Sufficient refreshment at the coke stand, although we never went there.

Sufficient clean portaloos.

Elite level competitors riders with good discipline,

Medical back up was good.

Radio between myself and my commissaire made the category we managed silky smooth.

There were 4 THINK BIKE marshals on the event as well.

Very different approach.

Made me extremely proud of our own marshals. Well done guys n gals, you really rock.

Andy, Any idea of the respective starting points of each the forthcoming cycle races?

Eg Franschoek/Paarl/Philadelphia/etc with dates. Or a link where one can see a program/schedule.

I tried to find info via internet, without definite results. The Western Province Cyling Association list Saturday races, nil on Sundays, from what I can see.

Also, how many races do they want marshals for during the rest of the year?

Hi Tony

Ek het dit gesien. Datums lyk reg ens. Maar ek sal graag wil weet of dit hierdie klomp is wat marshals soek.

Wat ek nie sien nie is waar hulle wegtrek. Bietjie soek lyk so:

    Tour de PPA = Durbanville

    Bouckaert-Soenen = Paarl

    Rollercoaster = Bergvliet/Constantia??

Correct itis league racing of a high order.

We had a team of three riders Cecil, Tony and I that did the first of the series- Stage 1: Sat 11 January 2014 RON Tour de Philadelphia (88 km) *

It was well organised and it was nice n early.

I have had a call from the orgnaisers.

They have up to now received many calls from both cyclists and non cyclists comending them on the marshals with the daglo orange armbands on BMW's.

In fact other race event organisers have called asking who we are, where we come from and we can book out the rest of the summer series, autumn series and winter series.

We got the same feedback after the last Spring series at Windmeul.

There were other marshals. but the BMW riders stood out as a really top class service.

Clearly we are doing something right!!!

Well done guys.

The Bouckaert-Soenen is in Paarl, (not Bergvliet/Constantia).

http://www.paarlrotary.co.za/bouckaert-soenen-road-and-mtb-cycle-race.html

I remember seeing a huge start/finish event last year at the industrial area between Noorder Paarl and Wellington, possibly that was the Bouckaert-Soenen

In answer to Geelkameel's queries:

1) Yes, this is a League series

2) The best place to find information on cycling events is on the Pedal Power Association (PPA) website under the events section. Everything you need to know is usually there: race date, start time, venue, map to the start (or at least a link to a website where you can find a map), etc. The direct link to the PPA events page is as follows: http://www.pedalpower.org.za/?post_type=sp_events&eventDisplay=upcoming

Hi Chief,

Can be available on Sunday, 2 Feb 2014. One of your posts say that it's at 16h30 though so sure it meant to say 6h30?

Is the meeting place at Alphen or some sport ground?

Have sent what's app.

ps. Don't have "blue teeth"helmet but have a phone :-)

Kind regards,

Salim

I'll be at Paarl Boys High this Sunday 26th at 05h45.

From Cape Town, take Exit 55 from the N1 (R45/Paarl Main Road). Turn left, follow the Main Road beyond the Boulevard turn-off to Brug Street; Paarl Boys High School Sports Grounds and follow the ‘parking’ signs. S: 33°74.99; E: 18°96.49.

Hi marshals

please be at Paarl Boys high early and meld aan by the gazebo.

You will report to Eugene Strydom. course organiser at 05H45.

you will be given the route map and the emergency number. please dial this in to your phone

Briefing starts shortly thereafter.

Those with radios, give one to your course comissairre so you can communicate easily.

The basic cardinal points of marshal duty

-- Safety is the most important. you are there to keep cyclists safe before you do anything else.

-  Cyclists may not slipstream cars

-  Cyclists may not slipstream you, so keep clear of them they will try get into your slip stream, slow down out of it not speed up away from it if they are close..

-  Cyclists must keep inside the solid white line.

-  Ride with the main group, herd the rogue cyclists back firmly into the left lane. (Cyclist race circuits are laid out to avoid any right-hand (across traffic) turns.

-  Watch out for guiding instructions from static flag marshals.

-  Net-in with with your comissaire car telephone or radio (if you have a radio link with them)

-  You can roam up and down the main group to warn cyclists.

This is a competition, if cyclists break the solid line rule deliberately to gain advantage you may red card them, give the number in at the end of the race.

If the group starts to over take the tail-enders of the previous group ahead of them, those tail-enders must drop 20 meters back from your group so as not to gain slipstream advantage and rest.

All objections must be given to the organisers within 20 minutes of completion to be valid.

Please ride safely, responsibly and give yourself the chance to get home safe.

Enjoy the event. you play an important role, use your initiative.

If the BMW club treasurer Natalie does not have your bank details you will not get paid. please mail Natalie your comprehensive details soonest.

Herman will give you the Daglo orange armband and has some radios on hand as well, please return to him directly.

If you have not marshalled cycling before, please be aware that cyclists corner faster than motorcycles and cars. As cyclist and commissaire I have seen many falls or close calls in cycling races because of marshalls and lead vehicles not realising how fast bicycles can corner and end up being caught or hit on the exit of the corner.

Having been a league cyclist myself, cyclists do not slow down for most corners, as we do on motorcycles and in cars, and sometimes even accelerate just before and after a corner.

Best is to speed up and get quite a bit ahead of the cyclists before the corner or, if safely possible, take the corner wide enough (eg on the outside of the corner) so that cyclists catching you can safely pass on the inside.

Just my 2 cents..

Work hard; play hard; never play when you work!

good advice Pepe.

Always ensure that your're 100-200m clear of the bunch just before and after corners.

Thankl Paul, sage advie indeed.

On this WPCE event series, the cyclists are top notch, viciously competitive and fast,

Each and every one as sleek as a racing snake.

You need to be very awake at corners!

Downhills as well, several times while leading the lead pack on the Argus I have found myself doing 95 kph and more down chappies and other side Suikerbossie to try keep ahead of the leaders. I've been on and just over my limits just to get clear.

It's amazing how fast a racing cyclist with the scen tog a finish can go down a hill, irrespective of twisties.

When doing sectors, even the middle groups can catch you out if you are not very awake.

Situational awareness is very important in race marshalling.

My biggest near miss was barreling down far end of Boyes Drive into the tight right hander onto Mian, jinking to miss the two drain covers with cyclists screaming at you to get out the way, and you are doing 90kph, way too fast to survive an oops.

Then you just hunker down, and go.... and 'note-to-self' - to never let that happen again.

Too true, Andy.

When you work with pro riders they can descend faster than a motorbike. On the long fast twisties in the Tour de France you often see the cyclists outrun the bikes.

Even experienced league riders can go amazingly fast around corners on a downhill. When the Argus Detour went over Ou Kaapseweg there is one particular riht-handed hairpin on the way down where the fast guys do incredible speeds. My topspeed around that was slightly over 60 km/h, but the fast riders just came whizzing past me in that hairpin.

Work hard; play hard; never play when you work!
