Hi, I see Ewan Mcgregor and his mate are already in Windhoek. Is there no ways we can try and do a ride with them or meet them somewhere.
Would be cool.
groete
JAco
I recall a photo of many bikes with them when they finished the previous trip ( Long way round?) Hard to think that they would not want other bikes around on the last day. Anybody that can confirm this?
regards
Guys,
I can understand just why they don't want to be mobbed.
If you consider the tremendous coverage this LWS has had on the internet, various forums and you look at the time- 90 days to do 25 000 kilometres.
Take off the days for looking around and for recovery- they had little time to thmselves.
Its the end of their journey and they have had their share of well-wishers, interested persons and paparazzi. All this goes with the territory of deing rich n famous.
But they did a lot of their organising through BMW. They asked Lachlan Harris for assistance and invited BMW SA to have controlled meet n greets with them at specific places.
At the club meeting we heard that these occasions are by invitation only. These arrangements were made 6 months ago anmd finalised 2 months ago. We'll get to see the story in the media - on the news and on DSTV and in the dvd shops.
What we won't ever see but can empathise with is the pain-in-the-gat side of the price of being R&F. Africa is very much more enlightened than given credit for. One of Dave and Russ's hardest tasks was choosing routes that avoided centres of tourism and population. Yet still they never had quiet time to themselves.
They had a few brushes in towns and near camps where keen itnerested persons really wanted to share their story and they are by now GATVOL of Africa, of BMW bikes and sleeping rough. It seems fun n glamorous to us but for them they could not stop and kuier at the lekker plekke- they had a tight schedule and it was shit going for a lot of the way. Africa is very populated.
Give them room, they asked BMW for room and for controlled meetings, just lets give to them.

I am become what those who have influenced my development , have made me. A work-in-progress.
Andyman Anyone can ride a bike fast.... But can you ride your bike real slow???
They knew that they were going to get all this amount of "HYPE" why did they not plan around it or keep the trip a secret until finnished? If you cannot take the heat, stay out of AFRICA!!!
If I am one of the first people to buy the DVD when it is released in a few months time, how do I live with myself knowing they were right here on my doorstep and I didn't get to see them??
I certainly don't want to shake hands or anything, but seeing a part of the process (even from a distance), would be a nice memory if I sit and watch the DVD one day.

Don' forget, that through our interest and our money spent on bike items all that stuff is financed.
No customers, no sponsoring !!
They are just interested to get our money and enjoy their life.
It is rediculous to think, that they had a hard time. Don't feel sorry, that they had to sleep hard, no-one forced them to do such a trip.
There are a lot of adventurers around the world, some even popped up at our BMW meetings, travelling under much harder conditions, without big sponsorship and little budgets.
We are biking off-road, it is our philosophy and fun.
One mustn't excuse or having understanding for all bad behaviour of selfish people
Yes, there is two sides to this.
They want a quiet and peacefull trip - with "our" sponsorship.
If you have a problem with this - dont buy there books and DVDs.
Thats my 2c.
Agree 100% with Olaf!
We, the gewone ouens, are the guys who pay through our ears for parts and service. A large chunk of that money is used by Corporate to sponsor spectacular trips and life-style advertising campaigns.
I would like to see that we, die gewone ouens, share in the excitement of the event.
Or, even better, leave us out & halve the prices of spares.
It would be sad if the participants of the event dont want us there.
They don't have time for me, I have no time or money for them.
I think it will be very lame to all go there just to see them - it'd be like we are their fanboys or something. I say we all get together, and then '''go somewhere else!'''
Hey that would be quite funny.
Imagine a few hundred BMW motorcycles passing them going in the opposite direction on their way for a cold beer somewhere.
Then get the story of this mass ride in the papers with a line in the middle somwhere.
"oh yes, saw two BMW's along the way with them two blokes from England", obviosly lost.
I wouldn't waste my time crashing the party, I'd rather ride with my wife and mates any day.
But I will still get the DVD, I love a good adventure.
Cheers
Warren
"Before you speak, ask yourself, is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, and does it improve on the silence?"
So there were alot of us there and what a day!! I for one had a great time. I experienced them as very, very nice - no hang-ups - nothing!
Charle for one has a hell of a nice personality - on the trip from Agulhas to Tableview he actually fell back at some stage
and rode with everyone (at least around me) for a short while, checking out your bike and and making eye contact before riding on to the next guy!
AWESOME!!
So, there were indeed a group that went to meet the guys. Great pity I missed this one!
Oportunity missed for a huge number of bikers.
Volgende keer ( ha ha ! ) moet ons so'n situasie bietjie beter hanteer.
Die forum was so vol negatiewe kommentaar en geen uitnodiging van die organiseerders nie. Ooknie enige kom-ons-gaan-anyway nie.
I think the club handled this very poorly.
Especially due to the fact that it was brought up in the last meeting and put aside to "Sorry we not going to do anything as a club" Yet invites were sent out in other biking organisations to join them on a ride.
Well done guys you really showed us!
My understanding is that the organisers had extended a limited set of invitations and the dealers were specifically asked not to allow a free-for-all.
Dave '''did the right thing''' and it is unfortunate that he should now be blamed for indiscretion on the part of others. We were not invited, and although those who crashed the party had a good time of it with no repercussions, it was still wrong.
So, whilst individuals are free to ride where they will, the club had no mandate to organize something like that... hope this clears it up a bit ;-)
........en geen uitnodiging van die organiseerders nie. ........
Point taken Charles. Personally I dont blame the Club & commitee.
I have a problem with the ORGANISERS of the event.
They very well know that a huge group of bikes creates publicity. (is this not what they want - publicity?)
I do not expect them to treat us on anything that would cost them Rands, not even cents. Just invite us to gather somewhere & join in the procession to Cape Town.
Yup - also a bit p****d off about this. Would loved to have been there. See on the video clip non BM's also joined ride. Have been following their progress on BBC site. Probably a couple of privilege few have been invited. Should have just joined them...
