Slopes of Sir Lowry's Pass

On the Ides of March [Saturday 15 March 08] Charles on his Mr. Badger came to play at my house in Gordon’s Bay while his son was on the BMW rider-pillion course at Nelson’s Creek with his squeeze. We wanted to go play in the sand at the Louwrens River circuit by the testing station in Somerset West but council has erected no biking signs and that kaibosched that plan. I tried calling some GSers from nearby but all were engaged elsewhere. Instead we kitted up and headed off via some interesting negotiation of Gordon’s Bay’s terrible back-roads in Mountainside Estate to the horseshoe bend on the N2 - Sir Lowry’s Pass. (Thank you Mr Town Council for the bad state of the roads)

ROUND THE BENDS -RAILROADING IN SOMERSET WEST

ROUND THE BENDS Sat 22 Sept 07 Riders: 1150GS Geel Kameel, 1150GSA Andyman, F650GS Annie. Location: Somerset West. Ride : 36km (1½hrs) following the service road alongside the railroad tracks. a there n back trip. Grade: orange. Weather: overcast, breezy with some light drizzle now and again. This was an adventure ride with all sorts of terrain briefly thrown in. Actually an excellent ride if you want to get a taste of off-road in a short time. It’s amazing what fun can be had, literally on your doorstep. We agreed to meet 12H00 Sat 22nd at Medicity Vergelegen, 2 other riders could not make it. The usual tyre deflation ceremony, lots of envious glances from guys in cars n bakkies as they passed by, chained to their wives n kids.

Andy & Anne's little offroad trip

A Fork in the SceneryA Fork in the SceneryAndy & I decided to redo the Beginner's trip with a few variances on the way. We started off at 9.30am from Gordon's Bay in brilliant but cold weather and took the Viljoenshoop turnoff after the Peregrine Farmstall. We meandered down this road at a reasonable pace (ahem a bit faster than last time!) and ended up on the Kleinmond road. We continued on tar, turned off into Caledon (as previously) and then followed the route till we hit dirt again. The roads were much drier, and I was quite disappointed to have no puddles and drifts to practice in....
