A Fork in the SceneryAndy & I decided to redo the Beginner's trip with a few variances on the way.
We started off at 9.30am from Gordon's Bay in brilliant but cold weather and took the Viljoenshoop turnoff after the Peregrine Farmstall. We meandered down this road at a reasonable pace (ahem a bit faster than last time!) and ended up on the Kleinmond road. We continued on tar, turned off into Caledon (as previously) and then followed the route till we hit dirt again. The roads were much drier, and I was quite disappointed to have no puddles and drifts to practice in....
Beautiful day and sceneryMore sceneryMore gravelly road
At one point we veered off Geoff's route and headed for Greyton - also a stunning route and road.
The traffic was a bit heavier on the Greyton road though.
Bike stop in the shade & mudThe Bridge
We stopped near a bridge for a spot of shade, water and droewors - and - what the hell - a Pajero screeched to a halt on this bridge and the contents spilled out - in the form of our friends and our daughter's friends. They'd spotted our bikes hidden in the bushes and came to investigate. We chatted for a while until they discovered the Pajero was blocking the bridge (a huge truck was headed down the pass at great speed) so they hurriedly retreated and left. What a chance in a million to meet them!

We had a leisurely lunch in Greyton and continued towards Villiersdorp, around the Theewaterskloof dam, eventually ending up on tar again.
We pumped up tyres in Villiersdorp and did a quick shop in Worcester, then headed for Bainskloof. We arrived at 16.30 at the hut, where we were joined by our family. We spent a lovely firelit evening and a "rustige" Sunday morning.
Andy dozes off in the hammock at the hut
The sad part comes where you have to pack your gear and head for home again.
We spotted a lot of other dirt roads on the way - Andy's GPS and bike were just dying to go down these. We shall definitely return and see where they go to!
Now I WONDER HOW THE SUTHERLAND Trip went!
I've just read a few reports from Lawrence (Herman) & Padlangs. Really nice....
