Elim - what a sobering experience! I could never imagine the emotional shock I had when visiting the Elim Home for disabled children and the Mispah School. What a wonderful gesture by Tanya, to organise a special Christmas party for these children and, more importantly, donate useful equipment (TVs, fridge, washing machine, educational toys, etc) Personally I was totally overcome by emotion during the visit to Elim Home. I had to take a walk outside more than once to settle. And, I promise you, I was not the only guy walking long circles outside. Andy was dressed as Santa, giving presents to the kids. Most of those children in the Home were not even able to take it from him. Their faces clearly showed total appreciation. Even that unsettled me. I spoke to various people after we arrived back home - each and every one was emotionally totally exhausted. I was kaput, klaar, kisboude. It is ironic that the staff at the Home were the only people who could physically say "Thanks", although the occation was arranged for the children. I am sure we will see a number of contributions in this thread. Words cannot describe the emotions that were experienced during this visit. And I believe Annie is preparing a trip report. The Mispah School was a welcome breather after the Home. These children were mentally handicapped, but could speak, sing, walk, sit, communicate. And (putting it harsh yet realistic) they looked like normal humans. They even performed a most remarkable play of the wellknown Chrismas story. Well put GK, After the event I was coming back to a party I had no heart for. Luckily our Helicopter rescue squad party was called off 'cos the crews were still out in the sticks airlifitng stranded people. So I just stayed at home in front of the idiot box and veg'd. I found the whole experience so emotionally draining and traumatic I was not good company and just needed to sit and 'process' it all. I'm glad I went. I thought I had seen it all and could take anything, but seeing kids in that state is very disturbing. My whole heart goes out to the staff who look after them. And Liouse and Claudia from EMS (Evvangelical Mission Society) in Germany who are there for 6 months do a grand job. The staff face this every day and have a wonderful repoire with their charges. I'm truly lucky to be the fat ass I am and able to do what I do. visitng places like this is just a small gesture of giving back. Thanks tanya. Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.
