Considering the number of speedsters I see on my daily commute racing through the traffic and with the increase of bikes on the road I often have to wonder how many of you have near misses on a daily basis. For personal reason I’m doing a study on the motorcycle and scooter riders who commute daily, if you would like to please answer my ? below: Do you wear ATGATT (all the gear all the time?) How often do you experience a heart stopper, daily, weekly monthly or never (i.e. when a door opens unexpectedly or an unexpected lane change) Have you fallen in the last year? What is your average speed when lane splitting? Have you considered racing? Many thanks

Bike - F650GS Dakar Riding frequency - commute seldom use car Avge traffic density - heavy esp Vanguard Drive ATGATT - No but 90% (I sometimes do the guilty thing going to the local shop). '''Bike''' - 1150GS '''Riding frequency''' - Daily '''Avg traff density''' - variable, Muizenberg to Newlands but not always during peak hour. '''ATGATT''' - always '''Heart stoppers''' - hardly ever. '''Fallen''' - one put down stalling while practicing slow sharp turns in a quiet street. '''Av lane splitting speed''' - 25km/hr faster than the cars. I often stand to see pedestrians weaving through the stopped traffic and so that drivers see me approaching intersections (with the immediate thought "who is that dork?"). '''Racing''' - Not really considered it though I thoroughly enjoyed the track day. Money and time are scarce.

Max. I dont commute daily, probably twice a week and anytime I have to go to town (i.e. traffic). Do you wear ATGATT? Yes How often do you experience a heart stopper? Monthly, but then I filter REALLY slowly & often have to let faster bikes past. Have you fallen in the last year? Not on the road - only off road - often :-) What is your average speed when lane splitting? Hard to say, but roughly 15-20kph faster than the cars up to 60kph then I just ride the same speed as the cars. Have you considered racing? No Dale

Gordons Bay, N2- R300 - Old oak, and al the others '''ATGATT''' - YES, Always jacket/gloves/boots (80% pants too). '''Heart stoppers''' - Yea, once back in 1988. '''Fallen in the last year''' - Not on tar '''Average speed when lane splitting''' - marginally > than traffic pace. Often standing up on pegs. NEVER IN THE EMERGENCY LANES!!!!! - HATE SEEN ARSE HOLES WHO DO RIDE IN EMERG LANES!! '''Considered racing''' - Not interested Ride all around the country, our Western Cape drivers rock! They are 90% bike aware. (give CF, CEM, CAM registered vehicles a wide berth as they do not use their 3 vanity mirrrors to look behind, they tip ash into your path, weave, chop lanes, brake & any other STUPID selfish type of driving you can imagine. There is bound to be an exception out there, I've yet to meet > one in a day.) Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.

Bike - R 1100 RT Riding frequency - commute 5 days a week + rides on weekend (28 000 km in last 12 months) Avg traffic density - heavy - Bellville to Cape Town via N1 ATGATT - always wear gloves and jacket. Only use boots on weekend rides (can't where the boots at work) Heart stoppers - very seldom (Worst one when springboks visited Cape Town - one of the reckless fans clipped my rear foot pegs) Fallen - not in the last 100 000 km, touch wood Avg lane splitting speed - about 10 to 20 faster than the cars. Find that cars "push me out of their way" if I do the same speed as they do - so always a little faster than the cars. Biggest danger spot when one lane stops and the other is going at a reasonable speed - drivers just pull the steering wheel accross to get to the "faster" lane. Racing - Not interested

Intermittent commuting, probably once a week and anytime I expect to negotiate heavy traffic, eg CTN. ATGATT? Yes, always. Even to the shop/cafe Heart stopper? On tar - one in 6 months. Average speed when lane splitting? Roughly 15-20kph faster than the cars up to 60kph then I just ride the same speed as the cars. Racing? No. Never want to. GK

Bikes - R1150RT and 650 Dakar (Piaggio X9 500 London) Riding Frequency - Commuted by bike for over 10 years. Traffic Density - A40 London solid congestion 12 miles 5 lanes. R27 - West Beach to Cape Town ATGATT - without fail, boots, armoured suit, gloves, helmet. Heart Stoppers - Cape Town beggars belief. The stupidity is undescribable. Anticipation meant HS about 1 to 2 per month. FALLS - 1) Hit diesel on intersection of Hertzog Blvd and Heerengracht with the RT - no injuries and no damage, 60 yard slide. 2) Woman driver changed lanes, no looking, no indication and, while I was literally in the same space into which she turned - bad, am still suffering. LANE SPLITTING SPEED - make rapid progress by driving to safe spots. Don't ride down between cars as if it's a lane. RACING - Had a Ducati, Triumph and R1100s, been there and done that. Enjoy swift mountain pass runs, hate long motorways and generally sit at speed limit on those. Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safetly in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadsides, loudly proclaiming WOW, What a RIDE!

Padlangs, have a look at http://bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/commuters-survey-results I think that's what you're looking for? Don't know why it wasn't included in the original thread.
