China transport - through a car window

Adrian Lee's picture

These pictures were taken from a car window last week as I travelled in an aroung Hangzhou. I tried to get a flavour of the bikes / transport and their uses. Within the city confines they are no longer allowed to used conventional motorbikes, only electric bikes. This has cleaned up the city, however there is no noise ! Very wierd.

They have also restricted car access with your number plate's last digit denoting which days of the week you may enter the city. This has had the effect of increasing car sales as people want access every day (opposite to what was desired). There are 500 new vehicles being registered each day in Hangzhou !

Early morning exercise

Early morning exercise

Hangzhou is built around West Lake and each morning, and well into the day, the citizens exercise in public. Various martial arts, dance, roller blading etc. All ages.

Typical early morning traffic

Even the electric bikes are used to transport goods. No licencing, licence etc required for these.

The most common form of transport around the city are these 3 wheelers. They transport everything, from hardware, to fabrics, to people, .....

Even used as mobile food stalls alongside the road.

Outside the city this is a petrol powered trike

Where more oompf is needed they use these diesel powered thingys !

Similar to London, they have bikes for rent at various locations around the town.

Could have sworn I caught a glimpse of David Cade in the traffic !!Laughing

Judging by the "gayness" this must be their version of a KTM !!

I could go on as I took many more pics of their various transport methods, but I guess these give you a taste of what I saw........

My personal favourite transport method !

For those boat enthusiasts, they even make the outboards electric for use on West Lake....how's this for primitave !

Whilst in Hangzhou I managed to get to the Pearl Market, about 2 hours south of Hangzhou. About 10 000 mtrs.sq of booths selling pearls.

This was a fountain show outside my hotel....in the lake.

The question is - did you catch a ride on your favorite form of transport?

Let it be.

wow - chinese buying multiple cars - just to get to work. An idea that would have seemed far-fetched a decade ago.

There are so many problems in this world. Luckily there's a wristband available for almost all of them.

I had to go in a Cherry the one morning due to the assigned car not being able to come into the city (we met it outside the city limits). It was described as the most basic car one can get at about R 40 000. It seemed great to me, 4 doors, electric windows etc. Then we drove and I realised what they had left off.....shock absorbers !! What a kak ride !
