Trevor Versveld very kindly gave me a DVD set called Duel Sport Riding Techniques which has one disk for the basics and one disk for the advanced techniques. After watching it a few times and reading some of the current threads on training and practice, it got me thinking, just how often and also where do we get to spend a reasonable amount of time practicing these different off road techniques. Not enough I’d say.
So I have arranged with a trio of farmers in the Kalbaskraal area to be able to take groups of club members to the disused quarry on their farm where we will set up quite a few different exercises with cones across many different types of terrain so you can ride (and practice) at will and for as long as you want. You can practice each exercise until you feel you have it and then move on to the next one.
We will also set up a loop in and around the quarry to ride and perhaps you can even see if you can get a little faster during the day.
One of the farmers has also kindly agreed to put up a large gazebo for us close to the quarry for some shade and to provide ice and cool drinks and braai boerie rolls for lunch for us.
We will meet in Cape Town, ride some back roads both tar and gravel to get there (approx 40 minutes) and then spend as long as you want riding and practicing in and around the quarry.
I will ask for a small R75.00 donation from each bike, partly to cover the cost of the refreshments and partly to contribute towards keeping the farmers drinking good brandy as a way of thanking them for letting us ride on their property. This can be brought with on the day.
If you are interested in a fun day of riding and practising, please reply to this post. I can only take 15 bikes the first time to “see how it goes”.
If succesfull, more days will follow.
Sounds lekker Warren, great idea, please put my name down .

Lol, Bella, I have to agree. I led a bunch of roadies down that same road on a breakfast ride a while ago because it's beautiful countryside, they weren't impressed with the "slight" undulations in the tar The GS managed it with aplomb though..
If there is space left please include Jean and I on this one, thanks. René
We can start a waiting list just in case anyone needs to pull out, I'll talk nicely for the extra 2 bikes so that everyone who has replied so far can attend this first day.
We will set up at least 6 to 7 exercises at a time so we won't be crowded. I will set up all the the exercises from the from the DVD's through the day, but please feel free to give input as we go along as I am not an instrutor. I am there to practise too.
Guys please, Marius will be buying cool drinks and rolls etc ahead of time for us, so if you cannot make it, please let me know immediately.
More details will follow a little closer to the time.
Marius just happens to be one of the top Flam Horse breeders in the land and he is always happy to talk about and show off his "children". He owns a set of 8 pure black stallions that have won many championships. Absolutely amazing creatures to see up close.
Warren, if I am in town I would love to attend - put me on the waiting list, please?
Thx
Du Toit
Been offline for a while so a late starter but include me.
Thanks.
Hi Warren,
If there is space Sian and myself would be keen to join in the fun.
Hi Warren
Please put me on the list.
Brent Sender
please put me on the waiting list
Please put my name on the list.
Thank you.
Hi Warren, any news for all of us "late arrivers"? Are we on the waiting list, or on top of the list for the next one?
Dankie!
Du Toit
You can take Tian off the list and replace with next in line, as some of you may know his bike went to scrapyard heaven a week ago.
Looking forward to the ride to say the least!!
With Tiaan's withdrawal dtv will take his place for this day if he is able to attend.
There were enough folks who contacted me to fill another day almost immediately and so another will take place soon. When I publish that date there will already be 10 names on the list. I must just confirm another date with the farmer.
Because it's also close to Cape Town and doesn't take hours and days of organizing, I am sure we can put together days like this quite frequently as long as there is demand.
I will post details of meeting place etc for the 2nd April by early next week.
Hi Warren, yes I am in, thank you!
Du Toit
First of all, our final list for Saturday is as follows:

I assume everyone on this list is still coming. If you are not able to make it, please advise me immiediatly.
We will meet at the Wimpy in Durbanville on the corner of Aurora and Burton Streets (almost right next to the Durbanville Race Course). Peter (owner) is expecting us there for a breaky at about 08H30. This will obviously be for your own account. If you don't want breakfast at the Wimpy, please advise me as I have "booked" for everyone.
After breakfast we will head off on the Vissershok road and "warmup" on three bits of gravel before getting to the farm. Details on the day will follow there.
Please don't forget your R75.00 per person which I will ask you to give me at the farm.
There will be refreshments in the form of cooldrinks, cold water etc at the gazebo and will we obviously have lunch on the farm.
If you have any questions, you can contact me either by mail at warrene@sdbsa.co.za or cell 0836030240.
Weather looks alright so far.
Looking forward to spending the day with you guys and hopefully sharpen those skills quite a bit.
Warren
2nd April then it is. Looking forward to the lekker ride and practicig those rusty skills.
Is it possible to get an indication for what time we will be finishing, because unfortunately I will need to home by 2.30. Cheers folks.
Folks can go home when ever they want, when they have had enough, when they are tired or when they need to. No problem at all, it's entirely up to you.
I'm too exhausted to write much , just to say thank you so much Warren and Natali for organising the day and to Marius the farmer for letting us use his quarry . The quarry on Marius ' farm was a perfect place to practice , lots of space for all of us , and plenty of ups and downs . I practiced sharp turns , and hill riding , and emergency braking and yes also jumps , both on the bike and over dongas . My bashplate came loose , again , I think I must get a HP2 !
Thanks also to my own Personal Trainer for the day , Nils, not that he had a choice , I just tagged along behind him and rode in his spoor , and did much more advanced stuff than I usually would have. He must have felt sorry for me because he started giving me pointers , and some good pointers they were too.
When is the next day ?
What an awesome ride guys. I think everyone found their own litte piece of terrain there to learn and push their boudaries a little. I think I speak on behalf of everybody thanking Warren for organizing a truley lekker day. You can definitely put my name down for the next one for sure. Pitty I had to race off early though as there was a lekker vibe there with everyone. Until next time guys. Cheers
This is getting so boring. The club events that I attend are all so well organised that I can find nothing to complain about. And this was yet another one.
The weather was perfect, the venue was perfect, the company was perfect, the lunch was perfect – everything was perfect. Well, not really everything. My riding was not perfect. I fell over twice, once with Jane on the pillion. But my skills and confidence levels were significantly improved at the end of the day.
The meeting place was at the Wimpy at Aurora. This was a very good choice because I love their fine cuisine. So much so that when I was courting Jane, I took her to a Wimpy on our first date. I am sure that the fact that we are celebrating our 23rd anniversary next week has something to do with that first date.
We left the Wimpy and headed to the farm with one or two gravel stretches on the way.
At the farm house we met the farmer, Marius, and some of his friends after which we headed to the quarry. We had two instructors with us, PeterO and Arno from the BMW Academy, both of whom gave me some very useful tips. I even managed to slide the back of the bike out to the left and the right. I have been wanting to do this for some time but was too scared to try. Thanks Peter.
The quarry is the perfect place to practise with a wide variety of surfaces and slopes, from very easy to “I will try that on another day”. Warren and Natalie had brought along some cones and ice boxes filled with cooldrinks and we all practised at our own pace with no pressure, stopping for a drink and a chat when we became hot and thirsty. I learned a lot from watching the experienced riders.
At 13:00 we went back to the farm house where we had boerewors rolls with smoor and hot cross buns for lunch. Very nice, especially the buns – I can't remember having eaten any nicer than those.
After lunch Marius showed some of us his horses. One can see that he is very proud of them. And justifiably so - what beautiful animals they are.
After lunch it was back to the quarry for some more practise. There I learned something astounding. Warren is a hooligan. He hides it very well until he gets onto his dirt bike. It was such a pleasure to watch him haring around on that machine which makes such a beautiful sound. Perhaps the bike would turn anyone into a hooligan.
All in all a brilliant day. Thanks very much Warren and Natalie. All of your hard work for our benefit is noticed and appreciated.
... I thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Great venue and a wonderful vibe. Those horses are just amazing too.
Natalie's demonstration of learning to ride was hilarious!
Thanks again.
I seem to remeber it involved sex, drugs and rock 'n roll (not necessarily in that order).
Who would have thought that riding around a handful of hours for a few hours could be this much fun. Thanks to all those who stopped by in "my corner" of the quarry to give some much needed advice.
A big thank you to Warren and Natalie for organising .
So, when are we going again?
without pictures.
Thanks Warren and Natalie for organising another great day. What a fantastic location to train in, we must do this more often. Its fun to share training tips with fellow riders. You learn by example ,for instance I followed Richard up that very steep hill/mini mountain, something I would not have done on my own. WOW it felt great. Stan was also having a lot of fun on his F800, a bike well suited to the location.
I also managed to get airborn(very exciting) after following Du Toit up an embankment just missing Warren in the process, a close call. They say a miss is as good as a mile.
This is one not to be missed in the future if you want to learn to be at one with your bike.
Sian and myself had a great time.
THANK YOU
Thanks for the great pics Jeremy. Looks great, and I am glad there were photo's as evidence. I think most people were having waaaaaaaaay too much fun to think of whipping out the camara. Thanks for doing that for the group
10/10 for organising the training day, Warren. It was well-organised, fun, great location, etc etc etc. Trevor - thanks for the info... Nats & Warren, thank you so much for letting me take a spin on your dirt bikes (well, maybe not... now I really want one )
I really liked the fact that there was enough space for everyone; and that you could ride a specific area (or do a particular exercise) until you got comfortable with it - while practise did not necessarily make perfect, my confidence certainly grew by the end of the day. I am particularly stoked that I finally managed to get a wheel off the ground!
Looking forward to the next one.
Baie dankie Warren en Natalie - dit was moerse, en ek en Francois het dit ook baie geniet. As dit mag is ons volgende keer weer daar!
The bikes are packed ("Flymo" and Rommel - thx VERY MUCH Andy!!).? To-morrow morning the two of us are off to the Southern Cape (me thinks - who really cares where we go as long as we are on the off-roads!?) for the rest of the week, so all of you who will be working: pse. keep the SA economy alive! We will think of you.....
Du Toit
It was an absolute pleasure arranging this practice day. Glad you all seem to have enjoyed it.
It's actually quite funny, every time I come across someone "new", during my planning of events, like the owner of the Wimpy, after I have explained what I want to do I find myself reassuring them that we are not a bike gang like the "Hells Angels" but just a bunch of motorcycle enthusiasts who will obey the law of the land.
I would like to thank Marius for the opportunity to use the quarry (despite the big signs saying no bikes, no quads and no fishing, thankfully no one caught any fish), Jeremy for taking some nice photo's and especially Trevor for making everyone a copy of the DVD's that started this whole thing. Much appreciated. Also to Arno and Peter for all the hints and tips through the day.
I'd also like to thank the Versveld's for getting us back into debt, shortly anyway. Man I should have never swung a leg over that 800, and more importantly, I should never have allowed my wife to swing a leg over that 800. Hier kom groot k............
After you all left I had a "debriefing" with Marius and the other land lords and they seem very happy with the way things went. It's strange reading some of the above posts that one of their comments was that there were "no hooligans". The debriefing almost got out of hand and I almost had to leave the Dakar there, but fortunately they had to go milk the cows and so I was saved.
I will chat to him about another one real soon.
Thanks again.
Warren
P.S I think there may be some new avitar photo's up soon. Thanks again Jeremy.
A big Thanks to the Ellwoods, I think everyone had a great time.
Arno
Thank you Warren and Natalie for a great day and my use of your toys, we both had an awesome time. Thank you Jeremy for the great pics.
