This evening I went to an inspiring talk given by Andy Green who drove the first, and to date, only car to break the sound barrier. The car was called Thrust SSC and the record run was made in 1997.
Andy and his team are planning another record breaking run at Hakskeenpan in the Northern Cape in 2013 when they are planning to exceed 1000 mph (a bit over 1600 km/h) in a car called Bloodhound SSC.
Have a look at their website http://www.bloodhoundssc.com/ it is very interesting.

I have been waiting for this event ever since I first learnt of it in late 2010.
Roll on 2015
Thanks Cecil.
Are you thinking of going to take a look? Perhaps we can plan a ride up when the time comes.
Hi Geoff
I have every intention of witnessing the record attempt, so yes, we can ride up together!
I am, in fact, contemplating a "recce" ride to the pan some time over the next 12 - 13 months (probably next June) now that I know of the 2015 target.
You are on Cecil - for the recce as well.
Depending on the dates and the number of riders making the trip to Hakskeenpan, you guys are welcome to sleep over with us in Upington.

Thanks Pepe, we will, at the very least, pop in to say hello.

Absolutely!
Thanks Cecil. To a non technical person like me, it was amazing to see, in the video, the delicacy with which that enormous press can be operated.
Hi guys
I was up on the pan last weekend doing a survey for the event next year - the GS was a dream except I broke the wind deflector when I hit a hole I failed to notice! We had three bikes and a quad doing the entire track.
I'm looking forward to seeing all the bikers up there during the runs.

Not entirely surprisingly, the project schedule has been adjusted again.
The SSC made its debut a week ago, with the 800mph record attempt at Hakskeen Pan now set for the weekend of Sat 15 Oct 2016.

Bloodhound has arrived, finally!
And it's actually running. The only downside is that it is not yet open to the general public.
The 1000 mph record attempt, which is expected to be open to the public, is planned for about this time next year.
We do have access to the daily run reports though - scroll down to the "Latest News":
