I have ridden and driven the Baviaanskloof many times before and in both directions.

This time I am spending a night in the "Kloof" and planning to exit it the next day via Patensie and Hankey.

Here is where I need advice :

From Hankey I am going to the N2 then turning left to Rocklands where I  again turn left on the CAMBRIA Road. this passes the Sandrivier Dam and then according to T4A it becomes a possible difficult section that includes ANTONIESBERG Pass then crossing the Doring river (the turn off to this section is shortly after the Mount Ingwe Guest House. The road then continues on  passing the Steytlerville turn off and eventually joins up with the road from Willowmore to the Bavianskloof....by the looks of things.

Is this CAMBRIA road rideable......is it a normal dirt road?

HELP!!!!!!

I suspect T4A refers to the Antoniesberg and the Grootrivier passes as the difficult sections of the Cambria Road.

We traversed these two passes, in the reverse direction to what you want to, do last year then we turned right to Patensie instead of left towards the Mount Ingwe Guest House.

Thanks Cecil.

I called Robby Roberts he of MOUNTAIN PASSES OF SOUTH AFRICA fame and he helped me with loads of info and a referral to his web site that has the route on video.

Then reading the info you referred me to helped a lot as well.

Also found out the the road up from Patensie is easly ridden.

Looking forward to riding a new route.

Those two passes both offer great riding and, I hear (we had limited visibility in light rain), stunning views.

Enjoy!!

You have a great trip ahead!

Antoniesberg/Grootrivierpoort is worth riding. Beyond Antoniesberg, towards Steytlerville, the road is quite easygoing, maybe even boring towards Steytlerville. But the ~40km section from telkom tower to beyond Antoniesberg more than makes up for it.

Ek is bly jy het uitgevind van die pad tussen Patensie en die telkom toring. Dis baie korter as wat T4A vir jou voorgestel het. Ons het daardie pad in 2011 gery en dit bly een van die top roetes wat ek leer ken het.

Thanks again guys.

So my shortened route will have me refueling in Patensie then backtracking about 4-5kms then  turning right then left on top of the mountain.

Looks and sounds great.......with some help from Google Earth.

Hi Geoff

Kevin, Graham and I did a similar route last December. Rony hooked us up with a mate who has accommodation near Elandsriver (a couple a kms from the Telkom tower).

Geoff we did the antoniesberg last year. Yip like you said backtrack a little from patensie and then right. On top of mountain turn left and then starts the frustrating ronde klippe...River crossing at bottom of antoniesberg is now concrete. Lekker route. You gonna loooove!

Thanks Hans. I am really looking forward to the entire ride with Kellan but especially this "new" section that I have not yet ridden.

Now lets hope the rain stays away.
