Bainskloof pass is going to be renovated, made safer with rock barriers and restored to Andrew Geddes Bains' original style- with tar, not gravel. For over 10 years the "Friends of Bainskloof Pass" in Wellington have been lobbying to have the pass restored. they've fought two governments ceasesly to preserve this heritage site. Visit the Wellington Museum and pick up a pamphlet on the history of the pass. 3 years ago, a government grant was made available to restore the pass and now, eventually, the work has started. You can still get to Calabash from the Rawsonville side. Over three months from 11 October, the single lane bridge will be replaced with a better structure. thereafter lots of stop go places as they repair other parts of the crumbl;ing masonary work which has been allowed to deteriorate over the last 150 years. I have had the privileg to meet some of the unsung heroes -just ordinary people who formed the "Friends of Bainskloof Pass", sought donations and tirelessly lobbied national government for so long on a project that had so many set-backs as gov minister after gov minister was replaced yet again and they had to start afresh each time. I salute "the little people" that made the effort to make a differeince for our children's children. Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.
