Ever wondered what the attraction of Atlantis Dunes is?  Or are you a bit afraid of sand perhaps?  Now is your chance.  We are organizing a club day in the dunes, with a support vehicle, experienced riders and some instruction and tuition.

The plan is as follows:

  • We organize the permits and refreshments and other logistics
  • Experienced riders will ride the bikes onto the easy sand for the beginners
  • The 4x4 will set up a base at the easiest sand around which there will be instruction, demonstration and small exercises to get you going in the sand
  • As our confidence grows we will lead outrides to explore the dunes and cement our skills

For catering and safety reasons, we are limiting this opportunity to twenty riders.  The permit and refreshments will cost R100 per rider, payable on the day.  If you are interested email me your name or add it in a comment to this thread.

Here is an appetizer from my very first time in the dunes with Freak and Ruan in 2007 - miles of space to ride with no obstacles to distract you.

If you feel you want to practice a bit - just do slow cones.  The basis of sand riding is in the fundamentals of riding cones.

Charles, I'm not so sure of my own abilities, and will gladly help where I can, but my son Byron is very competent in the sand. Without his knowledge, I'll volunteer him for assistance with getting bikes into the dunes in the event that the bike's owner is not that capable.

Looking forward to the day!

Martin Denkhaus has had to withdraw, and Lindsay Madden is now on the list.

Stan and Byron are volunteering to help, and there are some committee members also available for this.

Just under two weeks to go.  This is going to be a cracker of a day.  We will have a wonderful instruction and coaching team with some big names in adventure bike riding and instruction (details to follow).  There will be lots of help so that you can learn to ride the dunes easily and effortlessly.

By now you will be wondering about a few things, and I will be sending out an email with more detail.

  • We are looking to meet around 08h30 at the Total Garage on the R27 a few km outside Table View.  If you have the option of changing tyres, then put on knobblies.
  • If you are about to buy new tyres, or want to get a set of knobblies for the more serious offroad trips, then now is a good time to do it.  But if not, no worries, we will manage with what you have.
  • You should remove from your bike things that might break in a fall.  For example, take off your adventure spotlights, your screen, your GPS and if your bike has indicators that are vulnerable, take them off too.  You can bring some tools to do this at the venue and we can lock them in the bakkie, but it may be more convenient and less stressful if you do it at home and ride out there 'naked'.
  • Remove your top box - this is important.  Even an empty top box is bad news for stability in sand.
  • Although the ride out will be a bit nippy in the early morning, you will be hot within seconds on the sand - so dress accordingly.  There will be a safe place to put your warm clothes when we get there.
  • Wear full protective gear, including neck brace if you have one.  If you have an enduro helmet, and summer gloves, use them.
  • Camelbak, and Vooma sachets or suchlike will be a bonus.

I have also organized some youngsters on small bikes who can nip about and help you pick up your bike or dig you out of trouble to help save your energy for learning and having fun.

If you have any questions, ask now.  And if anybody on the list can't make it anymore, let me know now so that I can pull in someone from the waiting list in good time.

I have been quoted R1450 for a TKC 80 - 150/70 (GSA rear) fitted.

Can I get a better price anywhere?

Hi Charles,

I am pleased to see that I made it from the waiting list to the Top 20 (20th position).  Could it be the threat of showing those pictures of you in Ceres, dressing on the back of your bakkie?

Best wishes

Lindsay

Stan may come as a spectator/helper.  Brent (from PeterO) is now in.  Pete, I need Brent's details and email please.  The updated list is here.

Also for those of you on Adventures - you will want to remove your spots.

As for mirrors - bring a spanner or allen key or whatever to loosen them.  We can turn them inwards to be out of the way if we don't take them right off.

Weatherwise:  if Saturday is rained out we can postpone to Sunday to try to get use of the permits.  However, if the permits are not used you will still be liable for the cost - we will have paid for them out of club monies.

So far, the weather forcast is for light wind, partly cloudy on Saturday and Sunday.  Rain on the Friday before.  On the up side, it will be cool and the sand will be firm from the rain during the week.  Also, we are unlikely to be assaulted by hordes of quads or other sand riders and will have the place to ourselves.  Have a look at these sites that I use: Windguru.com and the Norwegian Weather Site.

If we are rained out, we can shift to Sunday for those that can still make it.  And the permits might be valid up to the next weekend if the lady at the counter is kind - but then I expect many might not be able to make it, and the event will be significantly downsized.  Regardless of the outcome, you will be liable for the cost of your permit at least, and possibly for some of the refreshments that don't keep.

Sorry Charles I have to miss out on this one as I am booked to go on the road ride on Sunday with Geoff. Can only manage one trip per weekend.

Thanks

Last time I was at Atlantis dunes, the permit was valid for a period of 7 days, allowing for a rained out weekend without losing the use of the permit. I don't think they would have changed this ruling, and it shouldn't be up to the discretion of the "lady behind the counter". If I remember correctly (a challenge at my age) it's printed on the permit that the thing is valid for a week.

PS: I converted my GSA a bit for this day...shouldn't have a problem now!

The updated list is here.

A few things to think about:

  1. Bring a tyre-pressure gauge and/or compressor if you have.  It will make it easier when we let down tyres in the beginning and to pump up when we finish.  If you don't have, no worries, we can lend you one, and there is a garage down the road to pump up again.
  2. Although we will have water and refreshments available, if you have a Camelbak use it.  Riding in sand is thirsty work, and I don't mind admitting that sometimes my mouth goes dry at the thought of some of the things I am about to ride through.
  3. Plan to arrive in Atlantis with just over a half-tank of petrol.  A full tank is just too much weight, especially on the Adventures.  The petrol station is about 15km away, so you can ride until your reserve light goes on.  Mr.Badger has done a whole day in the dunes on 3 quarters of a tank.
