My wife and I are planning a one-night getaway for her birthday while granny babysits... any suggestions on a place to stay in McGregor? "Affordable" options would take preference. Has to be on tar or very good (and short) dirt... I don't want to air down on the cruiser and I don't even know how to disable the ABS! :-D

There is a wellness centre in town that has the most fantastic accommodation set in stunning gardens. We have stayed there often. The adjoining restaurant serves great food.

If you have a 4x4, there is a wonderful stone cottage on top of the Riviersonderend mountains with easy access via the Groot Toren 4x4 trail. Not sure that you'd get in on short notice though.

I don't think so Johan, some the the climbs are pretty steep and loose. Plus they are very Eco conscious so I don't think bikes are allowed at all on the trails. But if you have a 4x4 or know someone with a 4x4 it is really a lekker cabin. Sleeps 6 I think, inside and ouside fireplace and from the balcony at night you can see the lights of all the towns from Robertson to Swellendam, the whole Breede Rivier Valley. Really slendid. Have a look here: http://groottoren.co.za/wp/

Yes, I've been to Groot Toren in the Jeep, but this will be an on-road bike trip. Groot Toren is a very easy trail (by 4x4 standards), so it shouldn't be too difficult on a bike, I would think. It's well maintained, but there are some sections with loose rocks that might be considered technical on a 2 wheels. If it wasn't for the awesome scenery, it would've been very boring in a 4x4. I think Warren is right about the owners though... I don't think they would allow bikes.

hey charl, give sea rescue head office a call on 021 4344011 and ask for krista. nsri were donated a cottage and it is rented out if not being used by sea rescue members. awsome place, not sure if they allow the 'public' there though. i only work to support my hobbies!!

We really enjoyed an overnight stay at '''The Old Mill Lodge''' S 33 57'12.44" E 19 49'10.86" Very tranquil (on the far end of town) & very pleasant hosts (ex Rhodesians that bought the place & upgraded it) http://www.oldmilllodge.co.za/
