Antoniesberg Pass - have you ridden it?

We recently filmed this stunning and tricky gravel pass north of the Baviaanskloof. We made a 2 part video series which can be viewed via the link below. The approaches (especially the eastern side) are almost as dramatic and enjoyable as the pass itself. Who has ridden this on a bike and how would you rate this pass for bikers?

Robbie, as mentioned in your other post, thanks for positng this.

Many of us have ridden and camped on this pass.

There are quite a few war staories of bikes getting broken and that its harder to do into Baviaans than out of Baviaans.

Thanks also for mentioning adventure bikes and 4x4's and for the footage.

The HP2 BM's love this terrain.

The 1200 GSA's find this pass a bit hairy.

But its doable.

Pity so many just ride it- up and over and out and do not take more time to appreciate the beauty of this area.

Overnighting at Timbila is a great option after this pass too.

Thanks for your great effort to put together a most useful reference site of passes. Smile

Your assesment of the Grootrivierpoort / Antoniesberg is quite like as we experienced on a 3-bike trip in 2011. A wonderful piece of road, yet quite rough. By the looks of it, those roads are probably never anything but rough, especially after rains. Our greatest challenge was the deep tracks made by vehicles.

I would rate it "Orange" in adventure bike lingo, (requires good technical skill, do-able without the physical help of a buddy) with quite a number of potentially "Red" spots.

And yes, very little traffic (we encountered zero vehicles in the Poort area). Do not ride it alone when you are on a bike. If you need help, you may be stuck for a lonnnng time.

If you are interested, see Day 2 of our trip report:

I read your very detailed trip report. Well done! Looks like I should give you an assignment or two!
Most people have no idea how long it takes to write up a report like that. That must have taken you many hours. Anyway, it's a great reference point for bikers. I should put the hyperlink in on the MPSA site for bikers. But non BMW club members would not be able to view it. Correct?

My first impressions of this forum, is that the level of intellect and quality of posts is considerably ahead of the pack. I am a member of a number of forums and it's interesting to see what sort of responses one gets from posts. I have been seriously impressed with the general attitude amongst this group of bikers. It says a lot about all of you and also the moderators who have molded and guided this forum into what it is.

Cool

Thanks for your compliments to our Forum.

The Forum represents what we have in a wonderful and vibrant club.

The club committees over past years, chairmen and webmaster are all enthusiastic and tirelessly work for benefit of the club, supported by a large number of quality members. And do not forget the contribution of the Road Captains that organise the trips!

The quality of the trip reports --- all written by amateurs, are a good indication of the enthusiasm and enjoyment with which we experience in the club.

Looking at your site on the passes, I am sure we will spend more time and words on the passes we ride through.
