Morning all, Hopefully someone can help me with a couple of pannier questions. A mate is looking to get a set and is looking for options. Are any of the metal ones available in SA (Touratech / Hepco & Becker / Metal Mule / etc)? I know you can fit the GSA ones to a regular GS, but the cost with the frames etc is prohibitave. Are the any locally made metal boxes? If any of you have aftermarket boxes, I'd like to hear your comments on them. Lastly, I have a set of Vario boxes (with the inner bags) that he may buy. They are in good condition but he would need to get the locks re-coded. What would a fair price be for them? Thanks Dale

Johan in the Southern Suburbs makes a good set. You can get his contact details from Dave Higgs at Atlantic.

Krauser the original manufacturers of BMW luggage for donkeys years are back again, more info shortly.(apparently there is stock in SA already). I will contact Johan and give feedback so that he doesnt get swamped with calls, making your own boxes is not easy and very time and labour intensive. Touratech (order from Germany if you want)/ Hepco & Becker (CYTECH in Jhb) / Metal Mule(no frikkin clue) (all excellent quality but mucho expensive). Dale +/- R 7000 - 7500. I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

Are you also just looking for 'hard' panniers??? I have a set of soft luggage panniers I bought in Jo'burg that works just fine. Also they are easier to store away.

Yes. Must be lockable. Marius, I'd be very keen to hear more about a locally made item. Dale

Dale, Try BIKEGEAR at the following e'mail address: info@bikegear.co.za or 082 859 2808 They import Aluminium panniers and top boxes. I use them and they're strong and affordable, well anyway when I bought approx. 6 months ago. Well worth a try! "Only on a BMW!"

Have a look at my profile pick and let me know if you like those as I too couldn't afford BMW's rediculous price. You will be very supprised what I can get them for.... Less than R7k for panniers & topbox out of aluminium! Small bit of engineering to fit but nothing major. Email me: tornadof5@mweb.co.za Cheers Warren

According to the latest Top Bike Magazine, Touratech is back in the country via bigger outlets. Website under their name.

I bought a set of Krauser panniers for my 1200GS 18 months ago from advrider.co.za.  The price made my eyes water - around R9 000 for the frames and panniers (38l and 45l to keep the bike symmetrical).

The both frames and panniers are very strong.  I fell off at low speed on tar and the panniers were undamaged - can't say the same for my ego though.

As usual, I didn't do any research before choosing Krauser.  Although I am happy with the Krausers, I may have chosen a different product if I had applied what passes for my mind.

The two minor issues that I have are the following.  Firstly, the ten mounting bolts for the pannier's bracket protrude into the pannier.  This probably contributes to the strenghth of the setup but it reduces the useable volume and can be an irritation.  Secondly, if you are going to carry something on top of the panniers, the tie down brackets on the lid are somewhat restrictive.  I have seen what appears to be a better idea on other makes.

My advice would be to have a good look at all the options before making a decision.

One of the riders on the Wild Coast with us this year lost his metal after market top box (not sure what make but NOT BMW) with it went the entire rear light assembly (don't ask me how) plus many many many thousands of rands worth of equipment, wallets, etc.

An expensive learning curve!!
