Before leaving for Namibia, took my bike to Adie and Mike Adendorf to have their prototype crash bar extension fitted.

The crash bar was, fortunately, not required on the trip, but having seen the damage to other bikes that had a tumble, I can vouch for the fact that this accessory is well worth while for protecting the cylinder heads and even the protectors that come standard on the GSA (that cost in the region of R3.000 if they get damaged).

It takes about 5 minutes to fit and all they do is remove a part of the standard crash bar and fit their own extended version.  Excellent! And the workmanship is outstanding.

Here are a few pics, bear in mind mine are the prototype and haven't been coated.

Now that it's been tested, Adie and Mike will be making one or two aesthetic changes to make it slightly prettier; for the cost it will provide loads of value for money in terms of paying for BMW bits and pieces if you drop your bike.

Hein Ehlers(AKA Peter Pan) take note you are in desperate need of this accessory. This way you wont run out of cylinder protectors and tappet covers in the near future.Continually practicing the ELEPHANT turn could work out expensive.Invest NOW!

I agree Trevor Laughing....but that one won't fit on my bike, the crashbars differ on my model. Will have to chat to Adie.

Trevor, you can sell Hein some Gaffer Tape in the mean time...I was amazed that it worked so well as a tappet cover bandage!!

Mike, can I order a set?

Hi

These units fit both GSA model factory crashbars.  A little adaptor is available for the pre 2008 models.

The nice thing is that if you have an older model and upgrade to 2008 onwards they will still fit. :-)

It is a straight replacement of the existing bars. Can be removed if you sell the bike.

It will also be available for the 1200 GS models as a complete crashbar set. (An extra centre section will be available soon at minimal cost.

You can look at pictures and info at www.rockfox.co.za

What is gaffer tape?  Is it different to duct tape?

I suppose one will have to remove these bars before one can  remove  the spark plug? Drowning GS's happens more often then one might think and if this bracket must be remove, one will have to budget extra time on your travel plan.... :-)

Gaffer tape is a much better quality, stronger version of Duct tape. It is used primarially in the film industry because of its strenth. If you cant bolt it down you Gaffer tape it down.It is a material based tape which has fantastic pulling strenth. Also it leaves no adhesive residue on surfaces. Its not cheap though. a 50mm wide by 25 M long costs about R185 vat inc. Shout if you would like a roll.

Cheers

Yes please Trevor, I could do with a roll.  Just tell me one thing, does it remove easily?  I don't want to end up injuring my good wife!

Hi Josver

No problem with access to the spark plug. The BMW tappet cover plate can be removed without removing the crashbar for full access.  We have not tested the clearance with the aftermarket tappet cover protectors yet.

At approx R 2000.00 a set for the BMW protection from MAX BMW the crashbars is a steal at R 1 700.00 per set.

If you ride your bike in environments where it may drown, then run a quick search for the -tech torque- series of DIY jobs on this forum and on the WD forum.

Look for the - AIRBOX MOD - session.

This simple conversion to post-warranty bikes will save you ever from drowning you bike.

Hi Adie

Is this a DIY jobbie or should I take it somewhere to be fitted. If so, where and approx costs involved.

My bike is still under guarantee and will the dealers fit it?

Hi Jacques

The fitting is DIY and can be done at home in 15min, If the bike has fallen over it could take a little wiggeling, as the crashbars may have bent ever so slightly. We can fit the bars at no extra cost here at our workshop in durbanville.

Just note I have spoken to Donfords and if any aftermarket system is atteched to the bike it will void the warrenty, BMW warrenty only covers Touratech parts. That being said if you have a spill and something should happen it has to do with insurance not the warrenty. It would be best to contact the dealer and jsut get some peace of mind, maybe

In builders the other day I came across a roll of 'Jaffa tape', which touted itself as 'Possibly the best tape ever', and had a tagline of 'Don't use Gaffa tape, use Jaffa tape'.

R32 for 5m, which seems a similar rate to your R180 per 25m.  So I got a roll for my tankbag.  Who knows?
