ZUMO 660 GPS

I am now on my 3rd Zumo 660. It’s very nice that Garmin replace the things when they go wrong, which is just about every time I really need the thing. In Europe the maps didn’t work at all and I had to use my Blackberry and a map to find my way around. The other hassle is I lose all the info, i.e. music, maps etc. on the old one and have to reload everything back on, plus the pain of going to Capricorn Park every couple of months.

It seems there is problem with the Zumo 660 but no one at Garmin will admit to it. Does anyone else have similar experiences? I do use mine a lot both on the bike and in the car where I travel all over SA.

Thank goodness for my trusty old Nuvi 660 as it never misses a beat!

I had the same issues, found a willing person who craved the 660 because his peers all had the 660 and I neatly swapped it for his 550.

So I'm happy again.

I had my 550 updated last week with all the latest Garmap info. (And T4A)

Now on my saved routes it takes me only from point to point and not on the actual route (road) despite rebooting often and also recalculating.

Very frustrating................

Now to get back to Avnic to see what the problem is!!

I came close in buying one when I scored a 500 for R1200 at cash crusaders. They never knew what they really had. Works like a charm.

I am now scared to upgrade after Geoff comments.Surprised

I see on Wilddogs they also moan about the 660. What is Garmin saying and are they listening for their next new GPS.

Do they realise we are their biggest clients - I mean us and the 4X4 guys. How can we promote them if they are selling inferiour products.

Is there another product than can compete with them. I know TOMTOM is very good as I have one for the car but what about T4A?

for just over 2 years now. I use it every day - ok, only to listen to music on the way to and from work (as I no longer need the GPS to find the office anymore).

I've updated the maps and firmware a few times, again without any problems. I've loaded local POIs (static speed traps, toll roads, etc). Routes can be easily uploaded after using Mapsource to plan them and tracks/routes can be downloaded after a ride - basically everything works as advertised.

It's very easy to backup everything - both maps and settings stored on the internal memory and the maps, music, books, etc stored on the micro SD card. This is very useful if you inadvetantly delete or overwrite anything - simply restore the backed up files.

I cannot compare to the older Zumo models (500/550) as this os my first Zumo.

I'm very happy with mine.

Geoff, have you not inadvertently changed your routing preference to "offroad"? I've noticed that in this mode it ignores all roads and takes you directly point-to-point.

I haven't used my 660 much on the bike (what bike?!) but it's a bit of a pain in the car because of the unresponsive touch screen. It seldom registers a touch by fingertip (nail is better), or is very sluggish to do so. Maybe cos it's optimised for glove touch ... will know better once - if! - I ever get to use it on a bike again.

Another gripe is the screen display/updates - every so often it simply blanks the screen and repaints everything, laboriously ... bad software!

Oh and one more thing - using the SA streetmaps around town - with the detail setting on High all I ever see are the names of housing complexes and blocks of flats - what's with that?
