I decided to return home from our Arniston trip on my own as I often enjoy solo riding. My instrumentation told me I had enough fuel to get to Caledon, but alas, about 5 kilos from the town the worst happened - I ran out of fuel on a very quiet stretch of road.

Now what - do I walk or what do I do?

Then I remembered what someone in the club taught me a while ago - lean the bike over to the left as far as you can to allow any remaining fuel to move to the outlet. This I did feeling very awkward and hoping nobody was watching and then I pressed the starter button and to my relief it started immediately and I was able to ride to Caledon to re-fuel.

Thank you BMW Motorrad Club Cape for a valuable lesson.

Well done on your self-rescue!!

Great work-a-round.

As an addendum,

Once you have the bike upright again,

turn the ignition on for  some 5 seconds and then off .

Repeat this twice before you attempt to start

As you turn the ignition n you will here the electric fuel pump charging the system and pressurising the injectors with fuel.

Then when you start, it takes quicker and is kinder to the starter motor.

Zero your odometer, you should have some 40 km of fuel now.

best to avoid this though, the motor does not like to run dry.
