Can anybody recommend a tracking unit made specifically for motorcycles?

Yes, go to search the site there has been extensive work done on this and I have been testing one for 2 years.

Utrackit are excellent.

Three types of tracking:

  1. passive transponder that is pinged by a slave transponder at strategic places like toll gates, main roads, airport, port and railway station  access roads etc. You have to pass within 100 metres and it logs your time and date thta it pinged you.  You can get reports on where and when you were 'located'
  2. Sym card fitted trackers that communicate as per your settings with mobile phone masts and transmit your GPS position to the cyber bank. You do need to be in connectiviy range and it stores only 256 meg of track (±50kilometres) before being full and it sends a data burst as soon as it recovers connctivity, so out in the cuds we struggle see our route. You can buy more data space but is not cost effective.
  3. Satellite phone connectiivty of the same process in 2. And you have all round coverage of data via satellite and this is mega expensive.

So option one is around R75.oo per month

2 is around R180/month and 3 is closer to R400 per month.

Horses for courses, if you want to know where you are or let some one keep track of you while you tour- they can log on to the website and watch your progress, then Utrackit have the best solution.

For just having a monitor for insurance purposes, then option one is the most cost effective.

Utrackit rent a battery operated version  of option 2 for around R30per day and we use these on events so Race Control can see where their marshals, medics and  logistics support teams are.

The passive has no re-usable battery and it lives for three years and then has to be replaced.

Option 2 and three suck power off the bike.  you need to choose if they are active direct off battery or active only when running (ignition circuit.)

There is a menu of options and you choose of the menu.

some options of reporting are user defined via the website log-in, others need to be set by the technical team via the website.

I played aorund with setting my position samples a bit and ended up with 2 minute intevals for location pin point & with a fiteen miunte data burst trransmission interval. You can select which intervals work best for your application.

In events we set for samples every 30 seconds and transmissoin every 5 minutes.

If we use them on the Cape Cycle Tour they transmit every 30 seconds (high cost of mobile service) but the trade off is race control has you more or less pin pointed.

I no longer see relevance so have returned my unit.

WOW!!! Thanks Andy. That was a quick PhD in tracking :-)

I just want it for insurance purposes & to track the bike if it is stolen.

I can download ridden routes from my GPS.

I definately want a unit that does not connect to the bikes battery.

Would that be option 1 from UTrackit?

Hi Alan

You can also have a look at the Beame tracking unit. Have a look at the below link for more information. The only "downfall" seems to be that you must sign a 3 year contract with them, but you can easily install it in another vehicle if you decide to sell the current vehicle.

Just to add my 2cents.

I have had a tracking unit in my bike for a number of years. It has saved me hours of frustration by not requiring me to sms my wife to tell her where I was every time I stopped.

On club trips interested family members of the participants could also follow our progress.

The unit I have does work off the battery but draws minimal power. It will flatten the battery after about 2 weeks though. Advantages are live tracking, speed indication, boundary settings and some international tracking. The unit can also cut power to the bike, blow the hooter and a host of other possibilities.

Data costs are less than R20 a month. No monthly fees and an annual fee of R 250. No other costs involved.

I am doing a short trip from tomorrow till Monday. You can track me to see how it works on http://115.126.3.75/index.jsp  the username is "keith" and the password is "millroy"  Click on "GTL"

Should anybody like to borrow it to try it out I am happy to oblige.

I used to sell these units and still have access to them at dealer prices but I do not know what the current price is. I guess about R 1600.

The same units are used  in my company vehicles with great success. I know where the guys are at all times.

Not all insurance companies accept them as they are not a big name with a big price on the approved "list".

Thanks to all for your invaluable advice.

I have decided to go for the TraceTech device as it is the size of a credit card & does not require battery power from the motorcycle. It is also affordable at a once off installation cost of about R800.00 & a monthly monitoring & recovery fee of R75.00 per month.  The UTrackit option was attractive but costs R2500 + VAT for the unit, R350.00 for installation & R96.00 per month data fee. They do not offer recovery & the unit requires battery power from the motorcycle.

Alan,

Bugger the installation fee.

all they do is unnscrewa side panel, remove the backing off the selfadhesive strip in the tracker and attach it ot the inside ot the panel and then screw it on.

Back in the day BMW insurance prescribed these trackers and they were all fitted like this.

As I sold bikes and aquired the  enxt I rem oved it, and re-attached it to the new bikle, then changed the certifiacte to reflect this change.

R800 to fix it to the inside of the side panel or other 'secret' place is LUDICROUS!!

why the need for a tracking device? Is it for insurance purposes?

with the mods I have added, it's valued at over 280k. The 10% saving on the monthly premium and excess waiver if stolen if I have a tracking device fitted is more than what I will pay monthly for a tracking unit.

Oh the scourge of Bling.....

Hope you were not honswoggled by the snake oil salesman into fitting another 15 kilos of expensive junk you'll never require.
