Doesn't this clash with the Sutherland tour? I'll be in the Cedarberg that weekend. :-(

I only know about the Sutherland trip 18 /19 July. And perhaps don't have track day on the long week-end 8 / 9 August as many people would be going away , and I will be at a wedding in Putsonderwater :) ''"4 wheels move the body,'' ''2 wheels move the soul"''

Marius thank you for the effort but in future please check with the relative committee members/club captains about the dates so that we do not double book events on the same day ;-) Johan de Jager "It's all about the ride, nothing else"

Last trackday I organised was not considered a club event, "Submitted by JohandeJager on 4 January 2009 - 8:41pm. Dear Marius, Thank you for taking the initiative for arranging this event - it is welcomed with open arms, I am sure this will be a great day and huge success. I have to however indicate the following: To ALL BMWMCC members, please note that this event is not a official BMWMCC event, no members serving on the club committee are involved in the organising of this event, nor do we have ANY problem with this event being organised by Marius. The club will not accept any responsibility of any sorts regarding this event. Hope you all enjoy the day and that Marius will (as always) take good care of those joining Johan de Jager" The logistics and orginisation that goes into putting everything together and making sure everyone is safe and has a good time is huge to say the least. I am trying to get an alternative date to accomodate those who wish to attend, the trackday will now also be put up on the Think Bike and Wilddogs forums soon as I have permission. BMW Insurance will be covering any riders with BMW insurance on the day. Thanks Freakonaleash 021 715 7182 biketique@motorlease.co.za skype: marius-burger RIDE,RACE,PLAY! I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

Actually, Marius - we are probably at fault here. All the events should be on the website calendar at the bottom of every single page on this site. For some reason, even though every single ride organizer and committee member has the necessary permissions to post events on our calendar, they don't. Marius thanks for the effort, looking forward to this. Regarding Rider Training on a Race Track... EVEN IF you have hardly ridden a bike this is THE BEST place to ride and learn also the safest as there are NO cows, cars, pedestrians or taxis, the only daunting bit is your perception about track riding.....there is no racing and marshals are watching the riders and have radio contact to the safety officer should anyone be riding in a way causing concern to you, they will be pulled off and given advice / asked to ride appropriately. The bike traffic on the track, as one goes out in different groups, one group on the track at a time, is less than a Saturday town ride! (Garries excluded):-) Don't miss this!!! This is the best help in making for safer riding on our roads. As I understand there will be instructors on hand for this. Add to this the training with Max and Co., if you can, this is the shortest route to safe riding.

I concur with Neil. My wife Julie says that if you are going to learn to ride, the track is by far the safest place to do it. It is a perfect learning environment, no matter what your skill-level - there are paramedics and safety marshalls, as well as instructors, the road-surface is clean, and the turns stay the same between laps so you can practice getting them right ;-) The rules on the day are very strict to ensure that better riders do not frighten learners in any way and everybody is accommodated. I have yet to see someone come away from such a day without a big grin on their face - ear to ear. Website Administrator [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]

If you can ride with other cars on the road, and not wait till midnight when little traffic, then you are more than ready to go on the track. It is not at all as hectic as normal traffic. Go and do it, you will be posting to encourage others afterwards!!!:-)

mmm possibly we could do the tar training on the morning of track day or that might be too much to do on one day ? But I agree even if we only manage to do the tar training after the track day, it is fine to do track day with no experience and it is great to do both, as the one will compliment the other. Max will be an instructor at Freak's track day also , so he can start you on the process , even if his formal training day will then posibly only be held the next week . We will be putting a lot of time and effort into the first timers, there is nothing to be afraid of, ITS NOT A RACE ! As Neil said, if you can ride in traffic the track will pose no problem at all. Trackday training tips "Part 1" Motorcycle track days have become wildly popular events, allowing motorcyclists to ride their motorcycles to the limits in a controlled environment. This is much safer than carving up the local public roads, but it takes the effort of the participants and track day organizers to insure that each track day is as safe as possible. Everyone involved should be aware of their responsibilities regarding rider and motorcycle preparation. Regarding rider preparation, all track days require the same basic personal safety gear. Most track day organizers will examine each participant’s gear and helmet when they check in. Proper rider safety, however, is ultimately the responsibility of each rider. One thing that’s hard for track day organizers to examine is the mental and physical fitness of each rider. The morning rider briefing should make mention of rider fitness, but it’s up to everyone to monitor their own condition at all times throughout the day. * Get plenty of sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast in the morning. * Riding a motorcycle on the track is physically demanding. Stretch in the morning to warm up. * Riding a motorcycle on the track is mentally demanding as well. Focus on the task at hand. * When you aren’t on the track stay in the shade and get some rest, even catch a nap during lunch. * Don’t feel like you have to ride in all of your sessions. By the end of the day, those twenty minute sessions may have added up to two hours on the track. * Fatigue and dehydration are leading causes of track day accidents. Stay alert and aware of your condition at all times. Don’t ride beyond your abilities and pull in early if you feel tired or begin making mistakes. * Proper rider preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable track day. Track day motorcycle preparation is just as important. 021 715 7182 biketique@motorlease.co.za skype: marius-burger RIDE,RACE,PLAY! I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

So Why Are Motorbike Track Days So Popular? * '''No Speed Limit''' - An obvious reason for taking your bike onto a race circuit is the luxury of no speed limits and no chance of getting fines. * '''Riding on a Race Track''' - A race track is the same as any other road isn't it? Well no, it is very smooth, does not have manholes, pot holes, cat's eyes, white lines, cars, diesel spills, etc and because you get time to learn the track you can ride at higher speeds then you can on the road and still remain safely within your limits. * '''Take your bike to its limit''' - To be honest most of us can not get anywhere near our bike's limits, even on the track. But we can ride to our limits.Gain new skills - Because of the lack of other distractions on the track you are able to concentrate solely on your riding and improving it. This improvement will make you a safer road rider. * '''Experienced riders available for advice''' - The primary purpose of having "instructors" on a track day is to help with safety. However they are also there to offer help and advice with all aspects of track riding. They will also ride out on the track with you to help guide you. * '''They are fun''' - This is the most important reason, nearly everyone leaves the track smiling and looking forward to the next track day. So there are lots of reasons to go on a track day, but aren't they dangerous? It would be a lie to say there are no crashes on track days. However if you ride within your limits there is no reason to crash. ==Some of the Do's for Motorcycle Track Days== # Ensure your bike is in full mechanical working order prior to arriving at the track. Bikes which are not roadworthy will not be allowed on track. Make sure you have sufficient tread on your tyre's and your brake system is in good condition. # Ensure that your chain is adjusted correctly and lubricated. A loose chain on a track can be a serious danger to you as well as other track users. If you are unsure about your chain tension, consult either your handbook, local motorcycle dealer or an experienced bike rider. # Ensure that your tyres are in good working order with the correct pressures and sufficient tread. When you are going around the track at speed, incorrect pressures could endanger you and other riders on the track. Again consult either your handbook or local motorcycle dealer for advice # Ensure you have full protective clothing & equipment. In the event that an accident occurs, all that will exist between your body and the track is the clothing or the Helmet you are wearing. A good quality helmet should be worn. Black visors are allowed. # Be sure to fill your bike up prior to arrival at the track, or ensure that you have alternative refueling arrangements. Some circuits have fuel available on site at a slightly increased cost, but do not base your day on the fact that fuel will be available on site. Most circuits have garages nearby. If possible bring some jerry cans or equivalent to refuel your bike. ==Some of the Don't's Motorcycle Track Days== # Firstly, don't worry that you have never done this kind of thing before. There will be no pressure on the day to get you up-to Super-bike Champion level on the day. The day is designed for your enjoyment and at no time will you be criticized or mocked for the pace that you are going around the track. There is nothing worse than putting pressure on yourself when you are on the track. When you do that as a Novice you will not be concentrating on the circuit as you should be, you will be thinking about 'How slow I am going' or equivalent. Nobody will push you beyond the level that you are comfortable with. The instructors might well encourage you to pick up the pace, or explain to you the physics involved in bike performance or handling. # If you enter a corner too fast and half way through it you feel that you will not make the turn, Don't grab for the front brake to slow you down. Whilst you have the bike leant over, grabbing the brake runs the risk of the front wheel locking up, resulting in a low side type crash. This is a very common type of crash. Once you have committed to the corner make sure your fingers are of the brake lever This reduces the chance of a panic grab of the brake. If you think you are going to fast DON'T PANIC and lean the bikeover further 99 times out of 100 you will make the corner - REMEMBER - SLOW IN FAST OUT # Take your time to learn the track. Instructors will endeavor to show you the correct lines. However riding styles and type of bike can affect your cornering technique, therefore do not be tempted to follow another riders lines unless you are very confident there lines suit your style.REMEMBER- SLOW IN FAST OUT. The instructors will show you the Entry, Apex and Exit point for each corner. # Do not worry about the speed and the fact that you might be going around a corner at 80mph and you see people going around the same corner at 130mph. Stick to your correct line through the corner and as you gain more confidence in you & your bikes capabilities you will naturally pick up speed. # If you come off your bike, DO NOT attempt to recover your bike if it is on the circuit. Every circuit has experienced Marshals located all around the track that will deal with this for you. In the event that you come off, make yourself known to the marshal if he has not already started sprinting toward you frantically waving flags in the air. NEVER walk across the track. # Do not try to 'act the clown' on the circuit. There is NO tolerance for showing off on the circuit. Deliberate wheelie's are not permitted, nor are 'Stoppies' or any other kind of tricks on the track. Any persons seen showboating acts will be 'Black Flagged' and potentially removed from racing for that day. ==Some General Comments Motorbike Track Days== # Relax - Easier said than done before the first time you go out on a track, but the more you can relax and get into the mind set of what you have to do, the better. Instructors will be on hand all day to take you around the track and advise you on what to do and what not to do. There are no words that can really calm you down other than some advice that was given to a Novice once that helped him untold. Those words were '''''"If you take the correct line, at a comfortable speed, and don't grab for the brake in a corner, there is nothing you can do that will push the bike to its limits and ultimately endanger you or the bike"''''' That rider adhered to that advice and had a good two day session without coming off. # Corners - When approaching a corner always try to look through it toward the exit point i.e. 'Where you want to end up'. As a rule your bike will go where you are looking so if you look at the tyre wall, you will probably end up in the tyre wall!!!!!! # Avoid false neutrals - Make positive gear changes # Commuter Foot Syndrome - Tuck your feet in when riding on track. Ideally you should have the ball of your foot on the pegs when cornering. Obviously you will have to move your feet to change gear and use the rear brake. If you watch professional racers you will see that they very often adjust there feet position just before committing to a turn. # Accidents do happen, be assured that all circuits have fully trained medical personnel on site. The majority of sites have full medical facilities onsite as well. There will always be an Ambulance with fully qualified Para-Medics available. Track Days can not operate without such personnel available. # Last and most importantly - ENJOY YOURSELF

Thanks for the tips, this will be my first track day and I'm willing to admit a small degree of concern as to my chances of watching Deloris skip across the corner into the tyre wall...

1. Increase your speed incrementally. 2. Find and use reference points for braking, turn-in and apex. 3. Focus your vision way out front. 4. Select a gear that uses 60-80 percent of redline at the exit. 5. Be loose on the bike and bars, not rigid. 6. Get body position set for corners early. 7. Hang off slightly--and comfortably--in corners. 8. Use your legs to move you around the bike, not your arms. 9. Go slow when learning a new track. Get the flow first. 10. In the wet, be super-smooth with all control inputs. 11. Ride with the balls of your feet on the pegs at all times. 12. Weight the inside peg entering corners. 13. Weight the outside peg at the apex and exiting corners. 14. Perfect practice makes perfect--helps muscle memory. 15. Ignore the rear brake. 16. Walk the track if possible. 17. Don't apex early; late apex whenever possible. 18. Get to neutral throttle ASAP approaching the apex. 19. Apply smooth but forceful throttle exiting a corner. 20. Keep body movements small or smooth while cornering. 21. Braking distances increase exponentially with speed. 22. Monitor chassis feedback through hands, feet and butt when braking. 23. Ease off the brakes smoothly as you lean the bike into a corner. 24. Brake in segments: first 10 percent (to settle chassis), then 75 percent (hard braking), then 15 percent (releasing smooth toward apex). 25. Get hard braking done early; don't wait till you see God! 26. Passing tip: Let off the brakes sooner and carry a bit more speed into the corner. 27. Release the brake more slowly than you initially grab it. 28. Ride a bicycle for leg strength and cardiovascular training; it'll make you a better rider! 29. Control panic by being in control at all times; resist the temptation to go beyond your personal comfort envelope. 30. If you get in too hot, look where you want to go, relax and will yourself to make the corner. 31. Resist the temptation to tuck completely behind the bubble; sitting higher allows you to see more, which helps nail your braking and turn-in points. 32. If you crash, get wide. It resists flipping. 021 715 7182 biketique@motorlease.co.za skype: marius-burger RIDE,RACE,PLAY! I RIDE THEREFORE I AM!

Nice one! I didn't ride it, but I threw a leg over it and it felt like a bicycle frame bolted to a scud missile. Should be good to see (and hear!) it going around the track! :-)

It is the same Bumble. I've changed the Two Brothers slip on for the standard, so she's quieter, but you'll hear Deloris for sure :) I like the scud missile concept, she keeps wanting to take to the skies with that front end!

Swapping a performance exhaust for a standard. Now that is a new one. But I trust that you had good reasons to do so. Mine has the factory fitted twin (sound optimised) Lazer, chromed cans. It's also not very loud, but it makes a beautiful buzz (thus the Bumble bit) when you give her something to get excited about. So I think between Deloris' triple and the Bumble Beemer, I think we're going to be creating a mini symphony! :-)
