Have thought about this solution often before, and this morning found it on Gumtree! Question for the 'more experienced' hands: what a re the drawbacks? I imagine there would be a maximum axle weight for each (towing) vehicle, and then what about non-lubing of cetain drivetrain components whilst bike is being towed? Would also allow knobbly front tire to be fitted, and kept clear of tar, and then put on a sacrificial rear tire until destination is reached? TOW A BIKE: Brand NEW. Tow your bike after a breakdown. Move it around short distances. You don't need a trailer, just a towbar. No extra trailer licenses or maintenance. Here for you now, The CRAZE HORSE towbar. Ive towed a bike up to Namibia like that. Only problem is you have to take the chain of on long distances. Also does not turn very short.C.

We might have to get used to this idea. I heard a voice saying that BMW has confirmed that the AA has the country-wide contract for BMW Motorrad On-Call. I also heard that the Easy-Loader trailer BMW gave the AA in Cape Town is at Priclo's in Brooklyn being fixed. Or, rather, it was fixed a while ago but they have not collected it. That is why they are sub-contracting Garden's Towing. To quote from my previous posting - BMW On-Call phoned me to say "the AA will be there as soon as they find their trailer". The flat-bed arrived 4 hours later. So I expect more postings of bikes being loaded, on their side, on a flat bed truck. The sooner we stand together and approach BMW the better.

Tried it with a scooter - started hoping like crazy .... In the 80's many scramblers were towed that way. Apparently it is not good on the front shocks ....

Only problem with this if if the bike drops into gear while towing ... your gearbox is going to have a VERY short life :-) Dale

So! As dit soos in my geval die enigste metode is "go for it" hou net kop want dit is verseker nie die veiligste metode nie.

Thanks Willem - lots of good info there. I am doing GR's Wild Coast Tour later thsi year, and, as you may know, the Transkei is a long way from CT on a single (650) in 2 days... So I had thought of using this system to get the bike to, say PE, and then ride from PE to Transkei with the 'big boys' (1150's & 1200's)! This sytem is both inexpensive, easy to store, and super useful for servicing the bike, etc. However, it may not be suitable for the weight of the 650? And also, you mention the "Dwars arms moet verkieslik kort (korter as op foto)en baie sterk wees. "??? Thanks for this info. Cheers http://www.themanorcottage.co.za

OK, will do the distance (no problemo!) Actually, just wanted an excuse to justify buying the tow-a-bike or similar...! Will likely buy a Kidney belt to help me, though - any of the brains out there have any suggestions, or are they all much of a muchness? Guess I could get a PINK kidney belt, then wear it 'clandestinely' ;) http://www.themanorcottage.co.za

Oh sorry, if you want "reasons" to buy things I'm able to help, about expert level!:-) I wanted a similar thing, so as to be able to drop off bike or scooter for a service, now I drop the bike off the night before and collect after hours... Atlantic is most accommodating in this regard. For kidney belts and earplugs try the Harley shop, they should carry belts for extreme vibrations!!

Kidney belts are much of a muchness. Don't go too cheap or it will fall apart sooner. They say it makes a big difference, but since I am unable to do the same trip on the same day both with and without the belt I am unable to verify. I wore the belt a number of times, but was still tired at the end of a day's riding. Would I have been more tired - who can tell? Been riding without it (because I tend to forget to put it on), but maybe I am fitter now. Website Administrator [http://honeybadger.net Honey Badger IT Services]

I tried a kidney belt for a while, IMHO, it's really a crutch for those with little or no core strength and just makes the problem worse. Regular Pilates classes and good posture on the bike are a far better option. Also, why not just rent a trailer for the trip? Dale

+1 on Dales comments The kidney belt is also very hot! and I don't wear it anymore... Also after a `lekker` lunch the kidney belt is very uncomfortable, because I struggle to put it around my tummy ;-) PS. BMW Kidney belt for sale... used a couple of times.... no idea what they go for... make me an offer if you interested :-) Regards, Corné
