Tires - F650GS

How many Kilometres do you get on your tires? I still have the standard Metzler Tourance tires on my F650GS and I have done 18000km now. My back tire is worn in the center. ( Yes I have some huge chicken strips :-) ). Front tire still looks fairly okay. I will probably wait until my 20 000km service and replace the tires. Hopefully the back tires lasts for the next 2000km. Is it recommended to replace both tires at the same time and what tires would you recommend? (I ride on Tar every single day but also do a lot of off road - or I think i do :-))

It seems people use 2 back tyres per front one (and Freak and Ruan even more ;-) When I first started I got similar mileage on my Twinduro's on Brenda Buttercup. Then I put on TW45 back and TW101 back and have about 13000 on them and the back needs replacing. My next one for the back wheel will be Maxxis Dual Purpose.

Corne Unless it's a financial impossibility replace both tires at the same time, front tire wear is often underestimated. Look closely at the front and you will see the blocks have rolled off to the edge, this is from hard braking on the front. The bike will be transformed with new tires. If you can affort it stick to the tourance they are the best for the extra tar riding you do and will last the longest. Cheers 2007 Dakar 2005 F650GS(hers) 2005 R1100S BCR 200? Ruan is very gentle on tyre use Ha Ha. Corne as y jou wheelies goed onder hande het sal jy 1 vorrwiel en 3 agter gebruik elke 20000km. as dit sin maak. andersins sal jou voor jou so 19990 hou en agter so 10000 als afhangende hoe swaar jou hand is en hoe groot jou ego.

Tyre wear depends on various factors, like rubber substance used; tyre care; over/under inflation; type of riding done; speed etc. To get 18000km from a rear means that either you care well for them and ride slowly most of the time or it uses a very hard rubber. On my Dakar the first set (Michelin Sirac) lasted +/-10000 (rear) and 15000 (front), but the first owner used to over-inflate. On the current set(Michelin Anakee) I have done 12000 (rear), with app. 2000 - 3000 max left, and 7000 (front) with lots left. My wife got +/- 12000 from her first rear on the F650GS, she bought it with 9000 km on the clock and we don't know how well it was treated, and 21000 km(!) from the front. Both were Bridgestone Trailwings. Current rear (Michelin Sirac) has done 12000km, with app. 3000-4000km left. She is however much lighter than me. I commute on the bike daily and further do mostly gravel trips. Madie does mostly gravel trips and a little bit of tar riding. We don't replace both tyres simultaneously due to the cost of running to bikes and also because of the fact that front tyres last much longer than rear tyres.
