Throttle-body Rattle

Mr.Badger is getting that rattle around the throttle-body - where the throttle-cable pulley vibrates.

The one side is very loose and the pulley wobbles as if it isn't screwed in properly.  I know it isn't normal, but is it likely to break and leave me stranded?

Pete - you mentioned having your throttle-bodies rebuilt at an engineering firm - would you give some details please?

Anybody have some advice - I believe this is an expensive item to fix.

Charles,  normal W&T for your kilos.

Its perfectly normal and not terminal.

The brass shaft is worn after 100 000k's and needs to be turned and slotted for the butterfly.

Pete has a tame engineer that does a good job.

Mine also rattles and the consumption is only marginally effected.

I'll get round to giving to Pete's guy in due course.

Anyone can ride a bike fast....   But can you ride your bike real slow???

Charles, the loose throttle valve and shaft result in the bike being untunable.  When connected to the computer the throttle position sensor cannot be set correctly so your bike will never be 100%

The other problem is that on a long trip, the rattling loosens the press fit of the pully cam on the shaft and, as was the case with mine, the darn thing breaks off and then you're left stranded with only one cylinder operating.

Two new throttle bodies - almost R10,000

Colin Brown will rebuild for R3,750 for both (divide by 2 if only one needs it).  He did a great job on mine.  He's in Boundary Road, Milnerton - 021 5522366

If you can dream it you can do it!

Ah, that is exactly what I am seeing.  I thought there was a bolt coming loose - but when I looked with a little mirror, saw what you accurately describe as a 'press fit'.  The whole pully cam is wobbling on the shaft and it seems I had better sort it out chop chop.  Damn, just my luck in the month where we are cash-strapped... :(

Thanks for the info Pete - I will get onto it.

Charles, I have a spare that we could get re-built so you bike stays in commission.

If you can dream it you can do it!

That would work wonderfully - 'cos then my one becomes a spare for the next guy.  Is it the RHS one?

I'll probably need it back when I reach the next 135,000 Km mark though Wink

Yes it is the RHS one.

Seeing as how loose the pully cam was, I have taken the throttle body off and dropped it off at Andrew King with the details you supplied for the rebuild.  Andrew might have other contacts that can do the job and is going to explore those also.

Now I am riding Brenda Buttercup.  A good thing too, because it looks like she needs some maintenance before I hand her back to Julie: Bent handlebar, bad mirrors, hard-to-reach clutch and brake levers.  I wonder whether a standard dirtbike handlebar might not fit, and with it some nicer levers?

Andrew King reports that he has found Pete's contact to be the best around, and has dropped the throttle-body off there to be repaired.  I'll let you know how things turn out when I get it back towards the end of next week.

Meanwhile, I am riding Brenda Buttercup.  It's not the easiest bike to ride - hats off to Julie for making it look easy.

On Friday Andrew King dropped off the rebuilt throttle body, with an offer to tune the bike whenever I was ready.  The butterfly valve had worn completely loose and had to be rebuilt also.

After fitting the throttle-body, Mr.Badger ran very roughly and would not idle.  I just managed to pilot him to KingTek Motorcycles up the road and Andrew tuned him so beautifully he now idles at about 900rpm cold, and 1100rpm warm.  And no more rattling.

It turns out that Peter's contact is the best value around, after Andrew King's research.  You can contact Andrew at:

Now, some years later, and Mr.Badger needs the LHS throttle body to be rebuilt.  Does anybody have a spare that I can use while I send mine to the engineer for a rebuild?  I would like to avoid being without transport for an extended period.
