Tent Choices for Africa and Europe

greetings everyone,

I am planning 3-4 month trip up east coast of africa from about May 2017 onward with an idea of ending up some place in Norther Europe

I am in need of tent that would be :
a) lightweight since i am going on the bike (bike's already heavy, R1200GSA)
b) packs neatly - space is of premium on the bike
c) durable
d) likely 3 seasons since i don't expect to encounter heavy snow or heavy sub-zero temps
e) reasonable cost wise ( i do think almost all tents in SA are like 30-50% more than europe/us in any case already :( ...)
f) I am not married to the idea of free-standing tent , but keeping in mind that Africa will get hot. i don't know if there are good alternatives (in terms of ventilation and coolness for anything other than free standing/inner-only tents)
g) needs to accommodate me (190cm , around 97kg, riding gear and panniers/top box etc when needed) so perhaps a big 2 man tent of 3 man tent really?

If i can buy one of the good tents in South Africa it would be great help.

So far i've talked to guys at Orca Industrial about tents and few people on HUBB.

My better options so far are :
Vango Zephyr 200 - 4000R
MSR Elixir 2 - 4700-4999R

I have not gone to Cape Union here in Century City in Cape Town, still planning to. Been to camp and climb in Paarden island.

MSR Hubba Hubba is much pricey i think, even though it's light

Please, if you could share your experiences, suggestions, gut feelings etc - i would very much appreciate it.

Thank you in advance for all your help and suggestions

Been satisfied with the bushtech biker tent for past year or two. Has enough space for two people and gear. Sturdy in strong wind and good construction should last a few years.  Only R999

Flying Brick?  I seem to recall they had biker-specific tents at one stage.

Your tent is your shelter, so you want it to be fairly robust and definitely waterproof in a thundershower.  Also, it must be gogga-proof (mosquitos, ticks, snakes, scorpions, lion!, baboon).

yes, we used to stock the Outdoor Elements tents, both the 1man and 2 man, though we only really sell the 2-man, since that space is needed for kit, etc...

the tent is call the Sunny2, by Rocvan, it is a (quality) Chinese copy of the famous MSR Hubba-Hubba, which retails around R6.5k, and the Sunny 2 was around R2.5K IIRC.

Should if yo want help, we can order in, but I would do some research on what I've written about - a well-known rider has done 2 trips to Ethiopia and back, and was very happy with his tent, and even got foreigners buying from us!

The Sunny 2 has aluminium poles (important, imo), and many features, such as footprint AND ground-sheet, etc.

If you want Uwe's phone number (he paid full price, and loves his tent!), give me a shout.

Google The KWAY Solitude 2. I have used mine on my resent trip only twice and is as good as new. but at my age I have now decided that I am finished with tent crawling. My one weighs in at 3.8 kg, fits into GSA panniers and easy to pitch alone. Sleeps 2 persons easily. Nou selling at Cape Union Mart for R!399. You can have my new one for R999,99. Strong RIPSTOP CANVASS Material

I love my solitude 2. It's easy to pitch if you're one person and fast to take down and pack away. I do come that the poles need to be placed diagonally in my GSA panniers.

If you don't mind a tight fit, the Oztrail biker swag is also an option. Not my cup of tea, but extremely rugged for serious Bush camping. Not for rainy seasons though when you don't want to sit in a glorified sleeping bag when it rains.
