TECH TORQUE : USING LATENT SPACE IN THE FUEL CELL NICHE R1200 GSA.

Has anyone any great ideas  about what container fits snugly in the void space in the RHS of the adventure fuel cell.

There must be someone who has already used this space to store items that need to be out the way but available in an emergency.

Behind this trim panel on all the R 1200 GS Adventure bikes is a 88 mm diameter X 210 mm long cylindrical niche.

Removing the trim panel you can easily see this niche.

It is used for an emissions and fuel  gazoning restricter thingamy on European bikes. but left void on the SA bikes.

The tank mould is cast for this thingamy.

Here is a better top down view.

for perspective, here is a 500 ml oil bottle nestling in this void. but the oil bottle is only 80 mm and 190 mm high so is too small for a snug fit.... but a passable hideaway anyway if nothing better is latched into the void.

Viewed from between the forks from the inside, there are two 5mm threaded anchors cast into the tank by Messrs. Motorrad.

So one can make a harness to secure whatever you put into the void.

For perspective, this soda stream bottle has the ideal diameter, but is a few mm too high to fit.

I'll be trawling the Plastics Warehouse & Mumbo's Plastics for a suitable container.

I imaging one can put 700 grams of tools/fluids/recovery straps, etc

into this void.

BMW's do not use oil between services, so oil is not really a need to carry on deep country adventure biking.

More useful to keep in such a container is an oil filter with its socket wrench and an 18" tube- these are spares I carry on every excursion into the remote vastness, but have never yet had to use for myself.

So having them permanently on the bike in this out-of-the-way place is a nifty idea.

Out of space, out of mind and yet there if and when you do need it.

Probably a good idea to store a spare container of hydraulic clutch fluid there.  It's not normal brake fluid and if you have an oops away from home, it can be difficult to find - it's not normal brake fluid, it has to be Vitamol so no everyone stocks it.

If you can dream it you can do it!

I suppose you have to limit it to sub 1 kilogram to avoid upsetting the trim.

And with a full 1000 cc capacity of void space to use, you can surely put quite a collection of small stuff.

I carry 500ml oil in my Twalcom side box anyway 'cos thats more accessible.

But I always pack an 18" limp-home inner tube as well as  my spare oil filter and its wrench.

But never sued for my bike before, only others.

So theses two are ideal candidates for the tank-tainer and hygroscopic hydraulic oil is a good thing to top up the tank-tainer with.

Watch this space...........

For those reading this post, don't be confused by the reference to hygroscopic fluid - that's brake fluid - DON'T use it in your clutch fluid reservoir!  Vitamol must be used for that - it's a mineral oil.  Very seldom need it but there have been cases where the reservoir on the handlebars was cracked and needed to be refilled.

If you can dream it you can do it!

have heard that a 'Nalgene' 750ml bottle fits in their well, also the 'First Aid in a Bottle' which i think is in any case in a 'Nalgene' bottle - let us know what you find out - Camp & Climb sell the 1st aid in-a-bottle...

Cheers

Twalcom "oil reserve" container

A bit pricey now: € 47,37

http://www.twalcom.com/home.php (TT® - Kit oil reserves container + bracket MY 08/13)

"The exclusive kit containing a container for oil reserves and its mounting bracket is made of  top quality materials.

Offers practice location  to the indispensable oil reservoir which is always good to bring with you, without necessarily have to carry it in a suitcase or backpack in the middle of clothing. The peculiarity of our kit is the possibility of a simple and quick use. Is, in fact, possible to top up the oil in less than two minutes and this without having to disassemble any part of the bike.

A true comfort! The kit fits perfectly with the design of the bike remaining completely invisible.

Peraluman anodized bracket. Oil container with safety cap. Capacity: 500 ml.

Directions: crystal-clear directions, drawn up in Italian, with photos.

The kit oil reserves container + bracket can be mounted only on model ADV version of MY 2008 and subsequent.

Awesome Kev and Chris.

Thanks very much for this info.

I see the Nalgene botlle can be bought at Cape Union Mart or even Touretch.

I will let you know what happens and I can steel a great idea form the Twalcom gold plated bracket.

I spent a good few hours yesterday trawling 4x4 shops, bike shops, outdoor shops Cape Union Mart and Plastics Warehouse and Mambos Plastics.
I looked at the Nalgene bottles too,

But no bottle filled the profile of rugged 182mm high by 90 mm wide.
At Mambos I found for 5 and a half Rond, this plastic bottle.

And its a tight fit, snug n tight

So what to put in it?
What to use to secure it in place?

Securing I will do with knurled big headed bolts like TWALCOM uses on their McGuiver for this niche.

I found my bike cover can squeeze in with little room to spare- so great bang for buck, space and mass.

But I always put my bikes pajamas on at night on overnighters, so I like it up forward in the crash bar bag.

The compressor can be made to fit in there, but will b exposed to dust n gravel chips n mud n ......I like my compressor accessible and ready to use with all my tire repair kit in my Pelican case  under the tail light.

The oil filter is about right but cannot get past the bottle neck.

So  now I need to review all the stuff I take for 'self-sufficiency' but rarely if ever use.
This would be front n back brake pads, Pratley's putty n Pratley's steel,

Ach.... maybe I'll make the securing strap from a hinge than only requires me to release the front bolt and allow the bottle to come out as the hinge opens.
Then I can simply use it for my bike cover.

Any other ideas?
