by TvN: Club ride, Geoff Russell, Offroad, Sutherland, No of pillions: 2 No of bikes: 6 Distance (km): 710 Date: 2007 Jul 14 - 2007 Jul 15 Off road to Sutherland! 14-15 July 2007 Keeping a close eye on the weather we anticipated a really cold weekend. Minus 9 the predicted temperature for Sunday! Wearing lots of warm clothes everyone met at the Engen Garage on Plattekloof road. Departure time just after 9:00. Wow, this was my first club ride and what an absolutely awesome experience riding with the group! At Bain’s Kloof & Mitchell’s Pass most of the bikes passed me and Jess as we struggled through the twists and turns. Refueling and meeting up with everyone for a quick breakfast at the Wimpy in Ceres. Now the fun really starts as Geoff takes the off road group and we head out to Gydo Pass. As soon as we hit the dirt road we take a quick break to let down tires, add some air to others, get some good pointers from Geoff and head off. Things are going well and even the two inexperienced riders manage speeds of up to 110km/h at times! Well, I thought this was quite an achievement! The weather was great, clear blue skies…typical Karoo day with absolute total silence (until Geoff grabs his helmet again!). Then it is dust and the sound of 6 delighted bikes heading for Sutherland again! Although it was mostly short stops to wait for everyone to catch up it happened often enough to ensure that everyone is still cheerful and in good spirit! And we were! From Op die Berg, to Katbakkies Pass, Skittery Pass on to Ceres Karoo. All the men eagerly helped out when Phillip and Vanessa’s Dakar needed some front tyre attention... The road leading up to our turn off to Ouberg Pass… Final rest with some pointers before tackling the pass…mmm…this is where the trouble started for me and Jess… After a tumble on Ouberg I was happy to hear that we are near Sutherland. Some chocolate, “Not too far to go” and other words of encouragement from the more experienced riders helped me and Jess to get to the fuel stop in Sutherland just after 16:00. Thank goodness for no male ego issues on my side allowing me to confess that I was scared now. Jess lost a few parts and her handlebars are skew but we made it to our guesthouse. A total of 370km so far. Now it was time to relax, at last. Jan ready with a glass of sherry as soon as we unpacked our things! Then off to the Hotel to meet up with the rest of the riders. As reported by Lawrence and Herman, dinner was a marathon affair! Great food, first-class company and good wine proved to be an excellent combination after an eventful day. Some of us were brave enough to go back to the Hotel to let off some steam on the dance floor before heading back to get some well deserved rest. Sunday morning started with a few repairs to tyres, Jess’ handlebars and quick bites to eat at our respective guesthouses. Then meeting up at the Sutherland Hotel before heading for Matjiesfontein. Jess wasn’t too happy to be on her way again and I truly considered leaving her there and riding pillion with one of the others. Have to admit that I’m very glad I didn’t. Nothing like getting back in the saddle to regain some confidence after a tumble. Although the tar road to Matjies was not my cup of tea we were soon back on the dirt road, heading towards Bo Swaarmoed. The roads showed signs of rain in the past few days with mud and the odd baby river crossing (ok, those who know better wouldn’t even call it a river crossing, but bear with me! This is my first ride!). Then to Onder Swaarmoed and back in Ceres. All safe and sound despite the Dakar’s front tyre giving some more problems on the way back. A quick refuel and then off for a bite to eat at the Calabash Bush pub before heading back to CT over Bainskloof. This time the mountain pass went a bit better as Jan and I left about 15min before the rest in order for me to struggle through the turns once more. Geoff presented us with a bike wash opportunity at his house before heading to our respective homes. Jan and I gladly accepted and both Jess and Shadow enjoyed the attention. Thanks Geoff! Back home just before 7. Dead tired, Jess minus a few parts plus a few scratches…but valuable lessons learned! All in all a great weekend and hopefully the first of many! Thank you everyone who made this a truly memorable experience! Next year Jess and I will bravely tackle Ouberg again, this time ready for that sharp bend! CT to Sutherland: 370km Sutherland to CT: 340km Total distance: 710km

Hi Geoff As a rule of thumb it is best not to duplicate content - neither on a website nor on the web in general. If you want to draw attention to the trip report on the forum, provide a link to it and point people to it. Here's how: # on the home page or in recent posts the link to the trip report that you click on is visible. Hover your mouse over it. Look in the status bar at the bottom of your browser window. You will see the name of the link. In this case it is 'http://bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/road-sutherland'. You can right-click with your mouse and choose the "Copy link location" or whatever IE calls it. # when you are writing your post in the forum, put the link in, either just straight as you copied it, or if you want to have some words with it that are the link, put a square bracket '[', then the link you copied, then a space, then the words you want to have linked, then a closing square bracket. Like this: [http://bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/road-sutherland This is the offroad trip report] kind regards Charles Website Administrator

Thanks Charles. I do this so people know where to find the trip report. "TRIPS & TOURS" is where laymen find trip reports.

Tanya, Let us hope that Charles can help you through the quagmire of how to post some "nice" pictures. Not these horrible little postage stamp size one's that are all I get from this Forum!!! I must say that Annie's latest pictures were full size. The pictures you sent me on the "preview" were great.

For a detailed description of uploading images, [http://bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/faq#39n34 look at the FAQ]. There you will see that you can have almost any size of image, with links to pop up a full-size image if the user clicks on a smaller image. The process is smooth and painless if you follow the guide. Website Administrator

Sorry Charles It took me nearly 45 minutes to upload the picturs for my trip report on Sutherland. Even though I changed the file sizes to about 150 kb each the pictures are no bigger than the previous time when I used 50kb pictures. Maybe it is a smooth process when you are on a broadband link - NOT with a standard modem. It is utterly frustrating. I am also not able to add a picture to a "reply". How is this done, or must you create a new thread each time you want to post a picture? Surely not. I can not see the "insert" button when I am in the comment block. While I am venting, I might as well point out that the system that shown "new" replies does not work. There are replies that I have now read three times, which still shows as "new". I have also happened to trace new replies that did not show as new. Is there any way of getting rid of the "white section" above the actual page content - below the "picture". Often (about 40%) of the time I have to scroll down before I can see the actual content. Lastly - Where and how is the appropriate why of addressing these "issues"? You know that I dont like all this negative stuff on the forum/site where visitors can then get the wrong (or should it be the right) idee of what is happening here?

Ja, I know what you mean. I am curious that you felt the need to increase the size of the images in order to get them bigger in your report. If you click on the image you get a popup showing the image at the full size - quite nice. 50kB is more than enough for a full-size image.

Aah, thanks for spotting that - I have turned it on.

Strange - I have not had this problem. I presume you are logged on every time? Basically, I look in two places - on the home page, where the most recent comments list is, and in the "recent posts" menu on the right, which shows me all new content on the site other than comments.

It is a mistake I made in the template - I have been trying to track it down but keep getting interrupted.

The right place would be either in the forum under the [http://bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/forum/34 chatter] section, or if you can phrase it as a question, how about creating a FAQ question and I will endeavour to answer it (Articles/Frequently Asked Questions). You are right, everything you do on the web is forever, and we want to build a site that is the definitive source of BMW Biking info in Southern Africa. That happens through positive contributions and feedback. kind regards Charles Website Administrator
