My version..... We all met at The Plattekloof Engen and it was quite a surprise to note how many bikes pitched seeing as it was so windy (GALE FORCE !) so early in the morning...... Well we were informed that we were to meet some other riders at the Engen N1 1 Stop and off we went! Upon arriving at Engen we did not find any other bikes ? Now what? Due to a phone call informing us that it was raining on the R62 the ride to Barrydale was called off and it was decided that we should ride to Franschoek just down the road....... Graham Porter looked at me and I looked at him and in seconds we decided that we wanted to RIDE.......come what may ! Du Toits Koof / Bains Kloof was mentioned...... Almost instantly David approached me and he asked if he could join us? So off we set into the unknown........we were joined by another two bikes by the time we approached the pass......great! On the outgoing N1 route toward Du Toits WE STARTED GETTING AN IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT ! We were battered and blasted by one of the strongest wind forces which I have experienced in a very long time and going up the pass it felt as if somebody? was telling me to turn around and go home ! Approaching the crest of DuToits we noticed two smaller scramblers hugging the mountain but we OR at least I was too busy bracing myself for that last corner to notice if they were in need of some help........I hope that they made it out of there! It was a relief to stop off at the Trout Farm and we eventually got to meet our new riding companions Bruce and Geoff as well as David and we had a hearty breakfast before tackling Mount Everest ag I mean Bains Kloof! This being my second only trip on the GSA ( Last ride was the faaaaast ride last week end)I was becoming accustomed to the sheer size and weight of this incredible machine and with my light 72kg frame I managed to hold on! Bains is very unpredicable at the best of times what with all the oncoming traffic etc but with a howling gale force wind this trip was going to be different to any that I have done for sure. Going up the pass was not too bad as one is protected by the mountain but as you ride over the crest the wind slams you about in such a way that you can only clamp the bike between your knees and relax you grip on the handle bar and ...............PREY ! Yuslaaaik it mense.......I can not describe the fear.... One particular moment the bike felt as if it was being thrown off the road as the wind came around a corner and attacked me and my thoughts went back to a trip which I had done a few years ago travelling between Springbok and Upington in similar conditions......I hung on for my dear life ! At the bottom of the pass I sighed and thanked the Lord that I made it out alive! So..... the R1200 GS ADVENTURE RULES ! I have not had so much FUN in a long time! We regrouped at the bottom of the pass in Wellington as the guy's pulled up for a breather... one could not help noticing the smiles! As we had intended spending a full day on the bikes riding to Barrydale nobody was in too much of a hurry to get home and the only reason that we did not stretch this ride out a bit longer was because of the irritating windy conditions but I personally decided that I had pushed my luck far enough today and we headed off in the general direction of home via a few detours and we eventually landed up at the Mountain View Farm for a well deserved frosty! Graham P Geoff David Bruce Thank you for the great company and we will meet up in the new year for sure.....it was nice riding with you all. I wish to take this opportunity to wish all BMW Club members a HAPPY X-Mas and a splended New Year and keep it safe out on the roads please... Regards Graham

Thanks Graham, I had this wind all the way from George yesterday. DuToits Kloof yesterday afternoon was no fun at all as the gale force wind tried it's best to pluck me off the mountain and deposit me some where in the Karoo!!!!!!! Lucky you guys skipped Barrydale as although we only had a few drops as we drove through the valley there was plenty of evidence along the way of some good rain fall's!

I went out on the bike at about 19h00 on Saturday and the wind was viscous. Although rideable, I thought it better to spend Sunday doing bits I've fallen behand on and, of course, a couple of beers at the yacht club. Glad you had a good time. Hi Geoff I think that the correct decision was made re Barrydale. I have not read anything regarding what the members did as they hastily tried to organise a breakfast venue at such short notice. Personally I was mentally tuned in for a ride and very little will stop me when I am in that mood.....commuting everyday is frustrating so a lekker ride helps to keep me sane ! It would be nice to know what happened.....anybody???? Regards Graham Johnson

The aborted Barrydale ride... from the back As Graham has already said, we pulled into Engen Winelands to check for some phantom riders that were to meet us there. Brian made the phone call to Derrick, we baled on the ride to Barrydale, and after some quick discussion, decided on trying our luck at Goederust. Brian made a quick call, and lo and behold, they could accomodate us, albeit they didn't have enough eggs to make us fried eggs, we'd have to settle for scrambled instead. After a few quips about buying our own eggs at the 1 stop, off we went to meet another few phantom riders waiting for us at the entrance/off ramp to Du toit's Kloof pass. Tootling down the N1 at 110/120 kph, (yup, I had a SLOW one ahead of me) watching the bikes ahead of me leaning at 30 degrees while riding straight was something to see... Tony Schlee's 9 foot 17 inch body battling the wind on a 1200 GS..... At the off ramp to Paarl proper, bedlam ensued ços one of the guys hadn't heard Brian say we were going to the pass off ramp and was about to turn off with the other guys following him, so I had to squirt ahead, gesticulating and hooting wildly to get them to stay on the N1. (riding sweep is never dull :)) The road from there past Drakenstein prison and Hollandse Molen was interesting to say the least, watching the folks from behind as they battling the gusts coming off the mountain at 90 degrees to our preferred (not always true though) direction of travel. Once again, Tony and Shah amazed me at the way they can handle their bikes in really bad conditions. After a wee overshoot at the entrance by Brian, we all made it safely to Geoderust, where a phenomonal breakfast (as is usual with Goederust) was had by all. There were quite a few new faces on the ride, which was really nice to see (Leon, Lionel? and Ita, Shah's friend on a GSA, Gavin). The wind was HECTIC while we were having breakfast and every now and then one of us sauntered out to check if the bikes were still upright. Leon's GS650 decided it had had enough of the wind and decided towards the end of brekkie to have a little lay-down on its side. No damage, I hope, Leon!! ;) Once breakfast was over, we wound our merry ways home. I contemplated going back via Helshoogte, but after seeing the clouds racing down the mountain into the pass, I took the chicken route straight to the N1 and home.

As a matter of interest, I have a hand held anemometer(wind speed meter) and measured speeds of up to 120 kmh at CTICC and 149 kmh on the Eastern Boulevard near hospital bend! Gwyn

This was the hardest ride for me to date. Forget Verneukpan Trip. Forget West Coast Trail. These cross-winds really knocked the wind out of my sail, especially when I was carrying my "precious cargo" on her first club ride. Riding at 30 deg angle to the vertical is uncomfortable but getting blown across the entire width of the highway is no fun. Scary almost. Good call by BrianM on canceling the Barrydale ride till another weekend. Safety first.

My friend on the GSA is JUNAID and his son is YUSOF. I will get him to sign up as member of the forum but he is away till after new year.

I want to thank Jeremy for - as always - a fantastic job of sweeper. Whenever I lead a ride and Jeremy is the sweeper, I always have the confidence that with him at the back, I know that all is ok. He does a sterling job of keeping everyone together and keeps the leader informed at all times. Once again – a huge thank you to Jeremy Martin as sweeper from all of us who ride in front of him. May the wheels never stop rotating?
