To shave or not to shave?

I find that although the seat of my 2006 1200GS is set on the lower setting, because of my short legs, I would feel a touch more comfortable if I had more conact with the ground when I need it. Would anyone suggest, or has anyone that has had the same problem 'shaved' a cm or two off their seat? I realise that I might be sacrificing some comfort on a long trip but I'm willing to do that.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that. I thought the two settings on my seat was all that was available. I'll check that option out.

If you DO decide to use an upholsterer to lower the seat, try either Dinesh Chetty or Leather-Tek. Both have previously been reccommended on the forum.

I had the seat of Julie's 650 shaved by a chap in Goodwood for a few hundred rand.  It made the world of difference for her.

However, beware, maybe your discomfort with the height is just unfamiliarity with the bigger bike.  Many have had their seats lowered and regretted it once they become more familiar.

Anyway, you can always add new foam to a shaved seat.  Here is a link for you:

Bobby, my experience with a lower (BMW) saddle on my earlier 1150GSA was that it changed the geometry of my position, when seated, to an extent. Legs more bent, not as comfortable on long trips and a little more effort to stand up. Although it wasn't serious, I preferred the higher seating position.

Now this may sound silly. But would thicker soles on your riding boots not solve the problem in an inexpensive way? If, after you've stopped laughing, you'd want to consider this option, speak to Deepak at Durasole in Wynberg - Tel 021 762 1837.

(In the end it becomes a philosophical question: If the bike is too high, then make it lower. If the rider is too short, then make it higher... Wink - just joking!)

With the footpegs mounted at the same hight on the bike the two scenarios (lower seat with standard soles or higher seat with raised soles) have the same affect where it comes to the bent legs and standing up.

I had the same problem with my RT and imported the extra low seat, which allowed me to have my whole foot on the ground when static. The drawback was when I did a few long trips, 4000 - 6500kms. My knees really pained at the end because of the extra bent knees.

I have reverted back to the normal seat on the lower setting. It felt a bit funny in the beginning as I could only touch the ground with the front part of my feet but am used to it now. Have done two long trips after the change and my knees are now fine.

So Bobby, my suggestion is to ride your bike as is for a while and see how it goes before spending money unnecessary.

You could always lower the pegs to compensate for the lower seat - this should help with any knee angle issues.

Fastway pegs, for example, are approx. 25mm lower than stock.

for the past 18 months, we have also been offering a seat-recovering option in our store, as well as building seats up/re-shaping them, and also creating low seats from a regular seat.

This is usually done in just 3 days, and usually costs around R750.

I have attached a link to a few pictures of some examples: http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-accessories-styling/milnerton/flying-brick-motorcycle-accessories/1001285014230910433338909
