Repairing/replacing 800GS instrumentation...

I am planning to buy a well-checked out, mostly cosmetically-damaged 800GS with damaged ANOLOGUE instrumentation (tachometer and speedometer). The plastic covers were broken by a helmet, AND both the tachometer and speedo needles are 'stuck' on the speed and RPM'sat which the accident happened... The digital display seems fully functional.

A replacement tachometer/speedometer costs R8k, so am keen to see how likely it can be repaired/replaced/other?

I think my options are:

  1. using second-hand instruments from either 800GS, 658GS, or 800 'S' or 'R', etc.
  2. repairing the existing instruments
  3. the 1200GS instrument looks near identical, but unsure if that would work. I know there is usually FINEPRINT on each speedo showing that speedos 'calibration stats' or similar? But there are likely many more 2-nd hand 1200 clocks than 800 clocks.

Does anyone know why the needles 'stick'? Are small gears in the insturments broken/displaced?

The instruments are visibly in excellent condition apart from the fact that both lenses are broken; ie no scratches, scrapes or visible damage whatsoever.

ACME doess not have spare 800 clocks, Brad (BM-Brad) does, approx R2.5K, though he is unsure if they work (!), and they too, have broken lenses. So they would need hooking up to check their functionality.

If I can get this sorted, I may have myself a very nice 800GS indeed.

All advice welcomed...

here's hoping...Smile

thanks

Chris

PM sent, Chris

Just for info, the cluster is purely electronic, not cable driven, so there are no gearwheels in the meter.

Hey Neil, Shane was my first 'port of call', helpful as always, but said it was difficult to dissasemble those clocks, and he does not know too much about them, fair enough.

But it's good that I posted here, since Jeremy Martin reckons he knows what the LIKELY problem could be, and it sounds very plausible...

more updates later!
