Reaction link and final drive

Here are two technical questions related to the above i.r.o. of 1200 GS/GSA:

1) How common is it to bend a reaction link (the rod running above the drive shaft) and typically how is it done? I.e. how is it avoided?

2) Are final drive rebuilds a relatively common thing for a 1200 GS/GSA?

Anyone with experience re the above?

Jacobus , I have see this twice in the last 4 years.

In both cases the Gents were riding like idiots and doing things with a GSA that in my opion you should not do. That siad , I do know they are prone to bending ( not always from being a Hooligan)

Im on my 4th GSA and 140 000 km and never had this problem.

I am Sure Andy and Goeff will give you clear answer to this problem.

I have seen it happen a few times on bikes owned by great riders who are definitely not idiots!  One is in fact an instructor for CountryTrax.

When BMW moved the arm above the prop shaft as opposed to the 1150 which is below, they designed it with a bend as the structure is not as strong as the straight, under the prop 1150 version and a few of them have bent, usually when the bike is loaded and or carrying a pillion and suffers a blow on the back wheel like a pothole on a tar road. 

Although it seems the 1200 is not as strong as the 1150, it's not an everyday occurrence and under normal riding (including Geoff's "slightly technical" trips), it is unusual and not something one should normally worry about.

Only advice I can give is head up, look where you want to go and get another pillion if she weighs the same as your bike!

If you can dream it you can do it!

Although I have heard of this happening in the past I don't believe that I have ever had this occurrence on any bike on any of the Tours that I have led.

From info that I have heard in the past the cause of this has been as Peter suggests, a bike fully loaded and hitting something like a big pot hole or a rider one up really bottoming out very badly.

Even on the Wild Coast Extreme Tour where we have had 1200/GSA riders with Pillions I have not experienced it.
