R1200RT rear wheel semi lockup at speed

Another problem with my RT, 05:30 cruising to work on empty N1, cruise control on, speed undisclosed, left hand fingers straight and resting on clutch lever, right hand on knee, lovely feeling. Going past Century City, VERY loud "clang" then a chirp as the back wheel locks for a split second, bike jerks to the right and engine revs to the limit, twist throttle down, not sure what happened, tap gear lever, 5 shows up with lots of noise and another chirp, pull in clutch and coast to left hand side. With shaking hands I sit and think. Stuck in 5th gear, heavy burning clutch smell. Get off, open seat and phone Motorrad-on-call at 05:44. Had to repeat myself several times as operator complained of background noise, (I could not get the cars and trucks to be quieter). Atlantic Motorrad called back at 6:10. I thought I could push the bike 200 metres to the Sable road offramp and save them driving to Vanguard Drive to turn around. Bike too heavy, started it and let clutch out slowly, bike moved forward about 2 metres and suddenly back wheel locked solid, pushed it backwards and it loosened up again. Shut the motor and tried pushing again, after two metres, with clutch in, back wheel locked, backwards and forwards I pushed about 50 metres. Help arrived at 7:35. Imagine two people pushing a R1200RT, with locking back wheel, up and down a ramp to finally get it on the back of the bakkie - ask Andrew, we sweated. When you are standing on the ground and the front wheel is on a bakkie, the bike looks huge and heavy. I found this on internet Recall ID # 06V104000 - POWER TRAIN: CLUTCH ASSEMBLY Recall Date APR 04, 2006 Model Affected 2006 BMW R1200 RT Summary ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE CLUTCH COMPONENTS COULD BECOME LOOSE WHILE THE MOTORCYCLE IS BEING OPERATED. Consequence IF THIS HAPPENED, THE COMPONENTS COULD EXIT THROUGH THE ENGINE CASTING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. Shane kept apologising as if it was his fault, relax Shane, I do not put any blame on you, your customer relations and service is always excellent. What upset me more during the two hour wait is that 6 Metro cars, a large number of bikers and ONE GS slowed and looked till I showed a thumbs-up. All the other BMW riders, more than 20, just went past, even a R1200RT went past in the left lane without even looking at me. Very Sad. How easy will it be to trust this bike again? It could have happened in a bend, leaning far down!

Wow thats scary shit personally I would'nt get back on that bike no matter who fixed it.If it was a horse I'd shoot it. Sell it and never look back. As for the BM guys who past you thats bad guys if it was the wild west I would have sat on my freshly executed horse and thrown stones at you. I would hope everyone from this forum would have stopped. at times I ride faster than my guardian angle can fly

William, sorry to hear about your mis-fortune. I am confident once Shane replaced the clutch unit and gave everything else a once over that "lady in red" will once again purr smoothly. Now, lets hope he can get the spares in time for you to join us at Oudtshoorn.

William, on another point. Last weekend I was driving a backup vehicle for an off road event. This gave me the time to see what these boxers go through when they go off the tar. Remeber that the differences between a GS and an RT is basically cosmetics and a different set of shocks. These bikes can take a beating!!!! :) The way we ride an RT, it should last forever - if they are put together properly in the factory.

That is bad news!!! Once the Atlantic boys have had a go at it it WILL BE GOOD, VERY GOOD, however all is not lost, trade it in and get a G S. Bum in the saddle, always.

Thanks guys, Flipper, I love the red colour and they do not come out like that anymore otherwise I would have been tempted to change for a new one, not sure what to think, being without it for a week to have final drive bearing replaced, only had it back for one day. I now have Shane and his magic on one side and a new "non-red" bike on the other, sorry Cheesy, too old for GS, been there, done that.

William, Thats scary shit! That is. I rode all my RT's absolutely hassle free from 1997 to 2006. I never ever once had more than the front wheel bearing go at 178 000km on my '80 R 100RT. Neil from Atlantic came out, rescued me, dropped me home, took my bike to Atlantic n/c and replaced the wheel bearing. But your stroy is scary stuff. That should have been a recal. I'd ask BMW SA to replace the entire bike. I for one would not get back on. I couldn't trust it no matter hoqw much I loved the colour. Glad you are here in one piece to tell the tale. When I was waiting for on=call to repair a puncture on the N2, only non BM bikes stopped to help. All the BMW's drove past. Sad boet, very sad. Myself it doesn;t matter what bike, I always slow and check if they want help.- pay it forward, it coems around later Andyman Yup that's me. Standing up in the traffic on the 1150GSA.

Thanks to Shane and Andrew at Atlantic Motorrad my red dream is running smoothly once again, he even came to work on a Saturday to finish it for me. What better service can you get? Apparently the main gearbox bearing had shattered - there was no danger of a full lock-up. I have to add, I spent many hours searching the net, nothing anywhere about a gearbox failing, so, just one of those things.
