Hi all. I'm new to the forum so don't know if this matter has perhaps previously been dealt with. I ride a '06 R1200GS which I baught new. It has done 27000 km. When applying front brakes and especially at 100 km/h and above, there is a shudder at the front end. I don't feel it pulsing on the brake lever but I think the servo assist is preventing me from feeling any feedback. I suspect that the front discs are warped again. After 11000 km they were replaced by BMW under warranty when this problem started for the first time. I am still on this second set of standard discs and pads, being Brembo. I have not been offroad and through water as some may suspect. I attend a BMW hosted trackday at Zwartkops Race Track every few months and there the brakes are expected to work but wonder if this has caused the warping. The pads leave no residue so I suspect that they are too 'hard' in so causing the disc to warp under extreme conditions. A BMW dealer has called my problem ' not uncommon'. The standard discs are +R 6000 excluding new pads. I am trying to source wave discs to see if it will rectify this situation. Eventually I would just like to enquire if anyone has experienced anything similar.Thanks.

Hi Marc01 Just had my 08 1200 GS brake discs replaced under warranty after about 8500kms of gentle use. Auto Atlantic was great and had no hassles with the claim. It does appear more than just the odd bike to have this problem. I have also been to a BMW track day and have also wondered if this wasn't the cause of my bike's brake issue. I guess these bikes are quite heavy and if the brakes are made to work hard, it could be that warping disks could happen more under these conditions. Not suggesting that this is OK! Tertius Have you spoken to your dealer that replaced the discs first time round? I would imagine that there could be some assistance from BMW if your second set of discs has also warped, even if your bike is not under warranty.

Hi Tertius. Thanks for the reply. The dealer here in Gauteng where I reside and where I baught the bike from and who replaced the discs under warranty, will not replace them again. They also suggest aftermarket discs such as the BRAKING make. I don't understand how a handfull of owners experience this problem when thousands of these bikes are sold each year. I'm about to change the pads to Ferodos to see if, with any luck, there will be any change. That alone is +- R 1100 for the front calipers.(DIY)

You should consider the front discs of a 1100 /1150 gs ,they fit and are 0.5 mm thicker and have less ventilation holes ,so more meat and less distortion .BMW made the 1200 lighter and also faster ,but they saved weight on every aspect ,even the discs. The 1150 ADV also had servo assist on the brakes and was about 30kg heavier and the only ones that ever had a shudder was the 2004 twinspark which had a unique brakedisc. So my view is if the older discs from the 1150 did not warp under severe sircumstances even with heavier payload and the same ABS and with 100000+kms they must work on the 1200 and I know they fit on the pre facelift ,I have fitted them!!

Thanks Elf, will consider. Have since fitted the Ferodo pads and they feel a lot better. Still a bit of a shudder so I suppose the damage is done. There is a lot of residue left by these pads (Ferodo Platinum) but I think thats a good thing. The BM pads left no residue which I was concerned about. Maybe they were too hard causing the disc to get too hot...I'm also still waiting for the various importers of wave discs to confirm if they are able to source them for this bike. Touratech no longer does the Wunderlich ones. Marc01
