I'm looking for places to ride to test my newly-acquired (but still novice) offroad skills. Can anyone suggest some good trails to go ride - obviously not on my own - where I can get more exposure to gravel, sand, mud, hills & rocks? Of course it does not all have to be on one trail, but that would be ideal ;) I know taking my bike to places like Melkbos 4x4, Zone 7, Dirt & Dust, etc are options, but I am actually looking for something that is not a 'track'.

Sunday will probably be better... however I see there is some rain predicted (30%) let's see how it goes... I will keep you posted on this thread or you can email me directly... The last time I went there after the big rains I got stuck :-) I had to get people to come pull my bike out :-) Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

I did an amazing ride on Sunday. Along the railway service roads from CT to Darling. There and back by lunch time. Wish I knew exactly where it was - i was just following the leader.

Where did you get next to the railroad line Cloud, I know where to go in but only from Chatsworth, Riverlands which is west off the N7 before Malmesbury. I saw that write up on wild Dogs and if you guys were on the Occultdale Road, you must have got next to the railwayline near Klipheuwel (where the grain towers are). I've done this before but only in my 4x4. Actually found it by getting lost looking for a short cut to the Cloof Wine Estate. It's a beut ride.

Not sure exactly where we got onto the railway lines, but you're probably right, somewhere near Klipheuwel. It was pretty foggy and misty in the early part of the morning - so I had no idea where i was.

Hi LadyAth, Dale showed me a Quarry some time back we were able to use - the clay is pretty solid, but there are some good sand patches, some decent climgs and decents, a nice open pan if you want to try funny stuff with the back wheel etc - just before Morningstar on the N7 - I'm actually planning on going again soon if you're interested. You may battle on the way in and out with a little sand - but it's nothing serious and I don't think (as a novice myself) that it's a bad place to learn some good solid riding techniques.

ShadedGS: I am definately interested. Please let me know when you head out that way again as I would love to tag along. I may be novice, but I am not scared *grins*

We can meet at my house? (8 Johanna Close, Plattekloof Glen) Map/Directions to my house... When you ride up the N7, just after the intersection to Blaauwberg, on the left is the toxic waste dump. There.

1 pm is fine, or even 2pm. Later and you get close to evening which I would prefer to avoid. Novice tagging along is also fine Tanya, because you can choose what you want to try and we are all in one place.

All in a days fun :-) Anyway back to the TOPIC! Don't get me angry now :P Even if we decide to go directly to the Quarry lets all meet at the Engen Garage next to the Goodwood prison at 14h00 on Saturday? Next to the Goodwood prison is a Abandoned BMX track.. Cool place to practice power slides and slippery mud riding. Then there is The Barrel.. next to Richwood. Loads of soft sand and a good stretch of `twee spoor` sand riding... And then `The Quarry` ... sand and steep hills etc. I'm planning on first visiting the BMX track then The Barrel and then The Quarry? We can all meet at the Engen garage next to the MX track at 14h00? Directions to the Engen garage: From Southern Suburbs Take the N1 to Paarl. Take Exit 15 (Goodwood, Monte Vista exit), This is after Canal Walk. At the top of the ramp turn left. At the first set of traffic lights (You will notice a fruit and veg and friendly Grocer on your right) and the Engen Garage on your left. From Northern Suburbs Take the N1 to Cape Town. Take Monte Vista exit. At the top of the ramp turn RIGHT. At the first set of traffic lights (You will notice a fruit and veg and friendly Grocer on your right) and the Engen Garage on your left. Ok, we meet at the Engen near Corne's at 14h00. I suggest we play a bit on the flat hard sand right there, then proceed to the quarry via the barrel. The barrel does not offer the same opportunities as the quarry, and I suggest we do not lose time there - ride through to see where/what it is, and go to the quarry. Bring a little refreshment because this can be thirsty work (I'll either wear my camelback or a backpack with water, and some cones so we can set up a course or two if we want). Who is all going to be there in additon to this list: * Charles * Corne * LadyAth * TvN * Alan * Cloud

There you go Corné, after your expansion joint "Guidance", Capt. Jack is willing to ride with YOU!!:-) I still intend coming along, just a bit concerned time-wise as I need to work.

Captain Jack you are more than welcome... I just want to state this is NOT an official club event... just some club members getting together... I had a look at the MX track yesterday... it's VERY muddy :-) and loads of water! I will bring my strap with if we need to pull some bikes out of the mud ;-) * Charles * Corne * LadyAth * TvN * Alan * Cloud * Captain Jack * Neil (Maybe) stuck in the mudstuck in the mud Corné Kloppers http://www.bikepics.com/members/pantsula/07f650gs/ 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

There will be enough mud at the quarry - we don't need to practise extraction from deep mud when all we want to do is practise riding on a slippery surface...

Speedy recovery Captain Jack! The riding was great, thanks guys :) I definately want to go there again. It was a great oppertunity to ride sand (albeit not always so successfully) and some intimidating terrain. You guys are the best ;) Tanya! You missed out big time...

The barrel was a bit mundane - several of the 9 bikes had not ridden sand before so we progressed haltingly. Next time, we won't take beginners through there - rather go to the harder sand at the quarry first. Lady Ath fell every few hundred metres, and before we could dismount to help her she would have picked up her bike and soldiered on. I have '''never''' seen somebody pick up their bike so many times in one afternoon and keep on going - well done. The quarry was fun, even though the main run-up areas for the inclines were under water and we could not do some of the climbs. Tricky sections: The water made it difficult to do some of the routes. Mr Badger toppled down the slope because I was concentrating on finding a route up the incline and not looking where I was going. In this photo I had already turned him so that I could pick him up. To divert attention from my stupidity I am helping Corne through the clay...Tricky sections: The water made it difficult to do some of the routes. To divert attention from my stupidity I am helping Corne through the clay... In compensation, the sandy area was flat and hard and made for great playing. I put out my cones in a long line and everyone played. I also put three big cones in an equilateral triangle and some of us practised 120 degree turns in sand. Neil was introduced to brake-turns and a bit of power-sliding. We had a hilarious moment waiting for the others to catch up: Rony Desodt had walked back to see what was holding up LadyAth and the sweeps. He nonchalantly leaned on the fence, and leaped 4 feet into the air when he got an electric shock (it was a well-marked electic fence). I nearly dropped my bike laughing at the spectacle straight out of Laurel and Hardy.

Charles, I think I'll skip if you take a group again. People were falling, bikes were in water and falling down inclines, electric shocks ... and that's mundane! I'm glad I was at a function yesterday afternoon!!!! ''The world needs dreamers that DO!''

If you can dream it you can do it!

Corné (not verified)
So what are you saying Peter, you want to go alone with Charles? ;-) "falling, bikes were in water and falling down inclines..." etc. = building experience :-) Anyway it's not recommended to to even go with 2 or 3 bikes... you need to be a bigger group... I've heard some guys got hi-jacked at the quarry recently... how did it happen? He was clobbered off his bike with a golf club!! Seems like some squatter occupants next to the quarry have good golf swings. Corné Kloppers http://www.bikepics.com/members/pantsula/07f650gs/ 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com
