Parking attendants

We got used to the system where a person comes up to you with this fancy handheld devic. You hand over some cash and you may then park for a certain period. On Wedensday I parked in town and payed for an hour. We got back to the car in exactly 60 minutes. The attendant approached me and asked for some more money. Some words were exchanged before I realised that she took the money for one hour but only entered the amount for 30 minutes onto the system. I did not ask for a receipt. :( Thus my word against hers. Hand over more money, OR ... LESSON: Get a receipt when you hand money over to these attendants !!! Alternatively convice your collegues to go to meetings on the back of your bike. :)

Actually, you don't have to do a thing. You could refuse to pay, and there is not much they can do about it. They can kick up a fuss about paying for parking, but legally i don't think they have a leg to stand on.
There are so many problems in this world. Luckily there's a wristband available for almost all of them.

Hi Padlangs, Same on Chapmans Peak they are very fond to when you ride from the Noordhoek side towards the Houtbay Tollgate to accept your money and wave you on without a receipt. I always insist on a receipt which besides not going down well with the "Toll Attendant" the motorists behind me become quite agitated with having to wait for a Biker but normally stop hooting when I get off my RT want kyk dan skrik die ou as hy nou sien dis 'n Biker en nie 'n BMW Motorcyclist nie wat na hom aangestap kom nie...:-) The mere sight of this non motorcyclist Waistcoat Bad Boy Biker with Badges seems to "Put the Nerve on the motorist" as our Bo Kaapse and Kalkbay Fishing Harbour fellow rainbow people would say :-)and suddenly it's the child that accidentally hooted (brat should have been strapped in on the rear seat)normally just give them the "Freak Bos Stare" a shake of my head and get back on the RT and ride off with my receipt leaving the attendant to fleece someone else. The Biker..... The BikerThe Biker Ps. Where am I anybody know without using your Garmins etc. :-) Cheers From Wet Luanda Braam

I NEVER give ANY money to parking attendants or `lap swaaiers`. Kerbside parking in Cape Town and the contractors have been a hot topic in recent times.... Do a google search and you will see: site:capetown.gov.za KERBSIDE PARKING Bottom line for me, those people don't have the authority to issue a fine, hence I never give them ANY money. I ask myself how much of the parking money actually goes back to the City council and how much gets `pocketed` by the attendants? Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

Be careful with parking attendants - next thing you know you come back to your car and there's a nice long scratch down the side - or you find your Bike lying inexplicably on her side... "Eish - now how did that happen?"

That is why you just ignore them, or greet them politely if they greet you and when you come back to your car just ignore them. DON'T GIVE THEM MONEY! If people just STOP giving them money they will not be there in the first place! By giving them money you just making the problem worse! I pay insurance on my car and bike and I don't need to pay anybody to look after them. Corné Kloppers 0849130391 ckloppers@gmail.com

Agreed Corne! But if everyone stopped paying them the little that they do, then they'd all be out of work - and you know what happens when people en-masse go out of work - toi-toi-ing and a rise in crime especially theft...

At Media24 - Naspers Centre - you get fined R500 for parking on the pavement. I would love to have about 50 bikes to come park, one per parking bay, and see the reaction then.

Which pavement William? I live in that area and would be willing to support a 50 (or even 500) bike "toi-toi" of sorts :) The buildings over the road are apparently the same - park anywhere but in a bay - and Mr Been-Sleeping-Under-A-Tree-High-On-Donuts is ever too quick to score browny points back at the office.

The devil in me loves that idea. It worked well in the Waterfront when the management there started clamping bikes that parked in non demarcated parking areas, and wouldn't discuss the matter. After a few week-ends of hundreds of bikes taking the parking areas, there is now a big bike park near Mug and Bean. Unfortunately if the parking isn't managed by Naspers then taking up parking spots will only inconvenience your colleagues and the traffic dept would still be perfectly happy with the status quo. Maybe we should park on the centre Island - with our statue buddy - that should provoke some sort of response - they surely can't tow away 500 bikes
