As a winner of one of the night's accommodation prizes in the lucky draw at Moooi on the Oudtshoorn Bike Fest, I spent last weekend at the Outeniqua Trout Lodge in de Vlugt with my wife . We had ridden past the lodge on the 20D route on the Saturday ride on the dirt route to Knysna. It is just after Angie's G-Sport on the Price Alfred's Pass. The setting is stunning, and Inge and Naomi have done a beautiful job here to create a truly relaxing resort. We upgraded from the tent to the Loerie Lodge and when we saw the warm fire roaring in the ceramic hearth in our lounge we were very pleased we had. The whole farm is "off the grid" - all the electricity used for the lodges, the campsite and the hatchery is generated by solar panels and water turbines. We felt transported to a different time, when people lived on what they produced and got by on what the Earth provided. Although most of the guests came by car this weekend, it is a perfect place for bikers - Inge and Naomi both ride (1150GS & a F650GS twin). I was treated to a tour of the local trails on the farm's "hoerfiets" - everyone rides her - under the guidance of Inge. If I was every stuck with a bike problem in the backwaters of the Karoo or looking for information about riding in the Southern Cape, I would want Inge to be around.

All in all, we had a wonderful break from Cape Town for a couple of days. Naomi was the perfect hostess and made us feel totally at home. If you are riding in that area, this is the place I would suggest you stop for a night or two - you will wish you had more time to enjoy the smoked trout, the clean air and the sparkling streams.
