Orania and back

DAY 1

Our friend from Richardsbay arrived on friday night clapped out after 1500km on his new GS1200.

Sunday 24/4 we left Sedgefield for Orania and area. We planned mainly tarr roads. First stop was in Oudshoorn to check out the BM fest. Saw the new 6 cylinder and all I could do was lick my lips. Then off to the Wimpy for a nice breakfast.

After breakfast we hit the road again. Stopped at De Rust for petrol, then through Meiringspoort where we stopped for a quick smoke break, saw a lot of BMWs on the road.

Next stop was B West for lunch and bum rest {we  old toppies must rest}. Then we headed for our first over night stop. By now the wind was realy starting to blow . Some 4km before Three Sisters we turned off the N1 toTaaiboschfontein B&B about 15km dirt. The old girl did not mind that the Karoo looks almost like the Garden Route green from all the rain.

Had a nice braai they supplied braai packets. By now it was getting nice and cold.

Day 2

Left Taaiboschfontein at about 8.00 and headed for Three Sisters for a good breakfast. There also met up with plenty of BMs on there way home. Victoria West was our next stop for petrol and to look around. Found Mannetjies Roux museum very interesting and the best cup of coffie I have had in a long time.

On we pushed to Britstown then,  De Aar where we  stayed at Potties B&B - very friendly - went out of there way to assist where ever possible,  R180 encluding breakfast. We set off to explore the town and railway station which I last saw in 1965 all I can say is that there is not mutch left.   Spent a good night talking rubbish and braaing. COLD

Day 3

Left De Aar at 8.30 and headed for the lost city of ORANIA. Traveled on dirt road from De Aar to first Kraankuil a lot of wash a ways on road. Again my better half was not to happy. At Kraankuil we found a guest house which was the old post office also very friendly owners {Pieter and Lizzy}. On to Hopetown nothing much there, except the old bridge across the Orange river.  Now for Orania which, about 35 kms from Hopetown. Orania was not what I expected...  it was very clean and the people were very friendly. The camp site and chelats were the best I have seen for a long time as well as a beautiful spa. They have a shopping complex and even a OK.  Only white people live there and they are proud to say that they do all the work themselves. If a truck arrives with 2000000 bricks  only the driver is allowed in and they call for help from the locals. We stayed in a house in the retired village where the owners had gone away R180p/p not bad. Day 4

Went to the Vanderkloof dam which is over flowing looks great. By now it was getting colder and windyer.

Day 5

Left Orania at 5.30 it was minus 6 and white with frost. Stopped at Hopetown my fingers were dead and paining. Put an old prair of socks over my gloves I took only my summer ones with. 20 kms futher on stopped again as my wife's toes were falling off from the cold. To cut a long storry short we arrived back in Sedgefeild in tackt and the 1200gs went like a trainas always!
