I shall be doing offroad training at Bilton Farm on Saturday from about 0900.

The training/practice/playing will suit beginners but everyone is welcome.

Let me know if you're interested so I can plan for numbers.

If you can dream it you can do it!

Julie is doing the Honda dirt-bike training at Riverside near Franschoek on Saturday, otherwise she would have been game.  Another time perhaps.

I had a thought (rare, I know):  perhaps we could organize a beginners' training day that didn't happen in one location.  Sort of a moving course where you

  • meet at one place and do the first exercise (Simon Says and cones), then
  • ride somewhere for breakfast, (riding on dirt standing up say),
  • do more cones,
  • then ride to an abandoned dirt road for the accelerate/decelerate exercise,
  • do more cones,
  • then ride to a field for figure eights,
  • do more cones,
  • then ride some more dirt
  • do more cones,
  • then have lunch somewhere else,
  • do more cones,
  • then do emergency braking,
  • do more cones,
  • and ride home via oysters in Knysna and Outenique Pass Wink just to round off the day and make it completely and absolutely perfect.
  • If we feel we need to do more cones we can add another session between the Oysters and the Pass.

Anyone keen to do something like this?  Anyone have ideas of suitable locations and routes near Cape Town?

No cost for this one.  If you want to make a donation to the club you're welcome.  The club will be arranging formal training sessions at a later stage where there is likely to be a nominal fee, but this is a first for the year of the new committee, mainly because I want to go and practice anyway.

To get there from Muizenberg, the easiest route is along the N2 towards Stellenbosch, turn left onto Baden Powell (R310) and keep going until the Lynedoch robots with the Zetlerbosch farmstall and garage on your left.  Turn right at the robots and keep going.  You cross the R44 with the Mooiberge farmstall on the right (that's the one with the colourful scarecrows), keep going past Ernie Els' farm, until you can't any more and you'll get to a security boom.  Go through and up to the cellars and we'll meet there.

You will find a map on the forum here: http://www.bmwmccc.org.za/bmwmccc-tweak-your-bike-morning

Four 650s, two 1150s and a 1200 gathered at Bilton Wine Estate to learn and improve their (OK, their riders) off-road riding skills. We covered the following in the morning session under the watchful eye of Peter:

  • the basics of the standing ("attack") position - clutch and throttle control
  • body position when turning/cornering
  • balance exercises - hand off the handlebar, alternate feet off the pegs, riding side saddle, stop-stand-move off, U-turns, etc
  • and a cool "party trick" - with very useful off-road application ....

One,One,

two ...two ...

(three) and off you go!(three) and off you go!

After a well earned lunch we returned the field for more fun:

  • braking using the brear rake only
  • controlling a rear wheel slide
  • using body position and the rear brake to "encourage" a rear wheel slide for cornering - some riders then tried the more aggresive "elephant" turn technique
  • emergency stops using both rear and front brakes

We ended the day by doing a few loops through the vineyards for some practical application of the skills learned. We all adjourned to the Protea Hotel at Technopark for a well deserved refreshment before departing home.

Thanks very much Peter for a fun filled educational day.

Indeed, thanks Peter.

i had a great time practicing old skills and learning new ones.

Appreciate it.

There are so many problems in this world. Luckily there's a wristband available for almost all of them.

Yesterday afternoon I rode a 250 2 stoke plastic bike for +- 2 hours on an enduro track.

Before I got on the small bike I rode the track with my R1150GS to learn the track. (lots of mud and sand)

After 2 hours of incredible fun on the plastic bike I rode the track on the R1150GS again and was amazed at how much more confident I felt in the mud and sand.

So KTM's are good for somethingWink

p.s This is how much fun I had
