as many of you know, I will shortly have 'Obtanium' engine guards manufactured, for the 1100/1150 GS/A and road bikes, due to their non-availability from the States, as well as extreme limited availability from the UK.

In both the US and the UK, these guards are often (but not always) favoured over engine guards for a variety of reasons - Google 'Stanton' in ADV Rider site / 'Steptoe Guards' in UK GS'er....

Obtanium Head Guards
The Foundry has come back to me, confirming they can make the head guards, after first making up the necessary left-hand and right-hand pattern (think Mould), from the samples I imported.

The patterns are expensive; R8892 for the 2 moulds. No products, just the mould! It’s a labour-intensive process, they are hand-made, take 1 week to complete, and are made 1.4% bigger than sample to allow for aluminium contraction when cooling (I never knew that!).

So, we need 20 riders to buy in, we can then produce them, to a high standard, for R1350 per set (excluding postage)
We need 20 sets sold to help offset the cost of the moulds.

The UK price is: GBP 140 excl.                           (Rands = R1717)
The USA price in 2004 was: $ 220 excl.               (Rands = R1687)
I bought my 2nd –hand guards 2 weeks ago for $225, + $72 shipping, VAT and PayPal fees                                                      (Rands = R2268)

Other costs post-production (but included in price) includes buying the rubber strip (1.4m per set of two) applied to rear of head guards, as well as 6 new bolts, each longer by approx. 20 mm.
And then the guards 3 locating arms will be drilled – accurately – for the replacement bolts.

The guards will be delivered smooth, unpolished, unpainted aluminium’ leaving 3 options:
1.   delivered unpolished and unpainted; photo 1
2.   buyer to rattle-can spray finish (say; Black or any colour of chioice), or paint them with Hammerite non-hammered paint, etc, photo 2 and 3
3.   buyer to polish them/have them polished – (I am investigating pricing of having them polished) as photo 4.
Next steps – firm commitment needed for 20 sets, then 50% deposit (R675).
I will request a build schedule from the foundry, and an estimated time of delivery – approx. 6 weeks from date of order.
Please confirm on list below, or else and your name to the list here on Wild Dogs http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=92046.0 (but please don't duplicate on BOTH sites!)

Hi Wayne

Yes, I do plan Obtanium head guards for the 1200 range (GS and GSA), and these will initially be for the non-DOHC model, since that's the bigger market.

Just need to get the 1100/1150's done first. Learning curve, and all that, though I have complete confidence in the foundry's product.

If you look on WD: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=92046.msg1870012#msg1870012

I had a firm interest on 22 WD's for the 1100/1150's, and am looking here on CT BMW, as well as JHB BMW and Pretoria BMW clubs.

But you are correct - there are probably 10x 1200's around for every 1x 1150...

Or what say you? 5 to 1? 15 to 1?

Stay tuned for the 1200 guards, later this year...

Cheers

Well done Chris, you've worked hard on this project...hope the others pan-out as well.

In just 5 days, we have 13 'takers' over on the WD website, for these guards, and need a critical mass of 20 to start production.

I am confident we will meet (and exceed) that number, but if any of the BMW M.C.C. Cape members missed my post - here's a 'bump', and an update!

PS: these will fit all 1100/1150/1150 GSA's as well as the 1150 road bikes, AND TWINSPARK - something I did not make clear in initial post.

Cheers!

we have received 23 orders for the 'Obtainium' guards, so work has now commenced on making the patterns (molds), and the expected date of completion of the head guards in end May 2012.

So if you wish to order a set, there is still time, R675 deposit for the set, and then R675 on completion/delivery.

let me know.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Hugh - a company in Namibia has made some up, but have not yet arrived - will chase them to see where they are in production.
