New chain coming off Dakar after 2200km.

I was riding my new Dakar (2200km) outside Matjiesfontein. Into a corner and as I was exiting obviously giving throttle with a minor broadslide, my bike's nose dipped causing me to leave the road and fall myself pretty deurmekaar. Upon inspection I found my chain came off in the corner causing complete power failure. The bike was a write off due to R65 000 damage to the motor and cosmetics. BMW SA inspected the bike and told me it was no defect on their side and they have no idea how the chain came off. Apparently has never happenned on a Dakar before and therefore they except no responsibility for it. I also lost my system 4 helmet in the process. End result was an insurance claim for which I had to cover 5% of the replacement cost of the bike and still without a helmet. Any ideas? suggestions? advice?

Dear Karel My sympathies for your loss. That is indeed a spot of bad luck. Could the chain have stretched a bit from being new to being too loose? The F650 FAQ has a post by a fellow who says that almost every one of the 25 chain-driven bikes he has purchased in his lifetime had the chain set too tight (which means it stretches very quickly). kind regards Charles Oertel

It is one of those unfortunate things which you cannot prove afterwards. With my last service my chain was set too tight, only 9mm of play where it was supposed to be 45mm to 55mm. Luckily I saw it and could correct it. But it shows the possibility of it being set too tight at the works shop during the PD service. But as I said, there is no way you can prove it afterwards. In future always check things like your chain play when you collect your bike after a service and do not trust the mechanic to do it right.
